I havent played an official game in 11 years since high-school...I play a pick-up game maybe once a week at the gym...
I would be willing to bet $100 every rip that I could hit 7-10 or better from the line...
These scrubs in college and the NBA are a joke.....This is what they do EVERYDAY....
NBA players get paid MILLIONS....and more than half of them are garbage at them....
If I was a coach, I would go 4 weeks during the season and do nothing but shoot free throws all day long and conditioning drills...no shooting, no drills, FREE THROWS AND RUN....
Im guessing teams would lose 25% less games if they could shoot free throws...
Its amazing how so many teams are so bad at free throws....in college and nba

You are NOT hitting 7 out of 10 with a full gymnasium, knowing ESPN is filming, etc... Whole different scenario/layout these kids are feeling from you and your neighborhood mailman rubbing up against each other at your local "Y"
I do agree though, that Free Throw shooting has become much worse over the years!

its because the modern day basketball player is more concerned about shooting 3s and dunkin the ball. But i agree so pathetic watchin these kids shoo free throws

You are right, I would shoot better than 70%!!!!! I can walk out right now and shoot better than 70%. If I played everyday, practiced everyday and basketball was my job like these kids, I would shoot 80% or better. Yes, I said their job. I played sports and I went to school for FREE!!!! College is EXPENSIVE. College scholarships are jobs. You are there for class and sports. Those are your jobs.
22 games last night. Only four teams shot 80% or higher. More teams shots below 62%, yes 62% than shot between 79%-63%
Its game 30+ of the season, and more than half the teams are still missing 2 of 5 free throws or more
Thats pathetic and terrible coaching.
I think 11 of the 22 teams shot below 60% free throws , and 4 of them shot below 50%

You could always go to a free throw shooting competition and see how good you are....
I won one of those at age 12 but I was too young to advance because it was for 15 year olds. They let me be in it thinking I had no chance lol.. I hit 12-15

If you are a good player, you mentally block those things out. It's just a game of basketball when you're playing.
I used to get nervous as hell before games with the huge crowds but once the ball is tipped it's irrelevant.

The only difference in a game is being tired and not in a rhythm, for some reason the hardest thing about hitting them in games I swear was my hands sweating so bad.

Everyone who brings up how hard it is, goes back to saying..."when I was playing in highschool"....
That is a big difference between college or pros.
High-school, people play for fun, high-school basketball isnt the purpose of being there.
These athletes, they are in college to play basketball. They eat, drink and sleep basketball.
Sure, they go to class, but Ive been a college athlete....class isnt the important thing.
Unless, you are people like Shap or Howard, players with HUGE hands, the ONLY excuse for being bad at free throws is LACK OF PRACTICE.
Perfect example is Noah from the Chicago Bulls.
I am not sure on exact numbers, but when he came out of college he was probably a 50% free throw shooter. His first year with the Bulls he shot below just below 70%. He said after he was drafted he did nothing but shoot free throws for about 2 month. Now, he is about a 77% free throw shooter. Why???? Because, in college they dont practice free throws. Of any skills a basketball player has, I believe free throw shooting is the only thing a person has control over. If you want to be a good free throw shooter, you can be. Its all reputation. The basket is the EXACT same height and distance away EVERY free throw you take. It wont change EVER.

Im just very surprised with how close schools in college are getting with all being closer with skilled players, that more and more coached dont stress and practice free throws.
Many games in the tournies will be decided by free throws

Someone put a stat on here about last years college basketball games and free throws.
Of all the games in the NCAA last year that were lost by 3 points or less, the losing team had a 60% free throw pct for that game over 82% of the time. I wrote this down because I use this stat on games that have a line of 3 points or less. I do okay with it.

Well I played college football and it is WAY more time consuming than college basketball and a lot harder to prepare for. That doesn't mean I just started dropping balls as a WR

I've hit 100 or more many times. Its really not that hard. Practice and repetition. I can say I would easily hit 70% minimum.
The sad thing is, I can watch a guys release on tv and know what hes doing wrong.....not following through, flat heels, fading away, quirky delivery, lack of rotation....on and on..... I dont understand how the coaches that watch these kids every day cant see it.

I think they do see it. They just dont care or practice it. Most shoot a couple rounds at the end of the day, but thats not enough.
The thing that bothers me the most is when I see a pg or sg AWFUL at free throws
They can hit like 45-50% from 3 pt but then shoot like 55% free throws
Look at Durant...the guy is great. You can tell that he put years of practice into free throws. Dirk too. Those guys are tall and scores, yet shoot like 90% from the line. Guys like that can make them with their eyes closed because of the practice they spent.
Worst part is, now after making this thread I am thinking about all the $$$ Ive lost on .5 or 1 point losses cause of missed free throws at the end of the game

Exactly
Watch Nm St against Indiana....Nm St can very well beat Indiana, but if its a close game, they 55% they shoot from the line might cost them a W

Its one of the first stats I look at when looking at a game. If you'll notice a lot of the mid-major schools can shoot them....Why? Because these are the players that had to in HS. Most of the major programs get kids that jack 3's all day and dunk on kids 8 inches shorter than them in HS and their coach never has/had a reason to make them practice free throws cause they were winning games by 20+ points. That being said if I was a coach I dont care how great you are, if you cant hit 70% you'd be riding the bench.....period. Sure Shaq and D Howard may be exceptions but they could also be much better FT shooters. Remember a few years back when Popovich from San Antonio went right out and started hacking Shaq....kinda bs but if you know a guy is gonna hit 1 out of 2 on average not a bad strategy if you make 3 or four baskets in that time...turns a four point lead into an 8 point lead....
