Iowa State 20, Iowa 17: Cole Netten kicked a 42-yard field goal with two seconds left to lift the visiting Cyclones past the Hawkeyes in the 62nd all-time matchup between the schools.
Netten missed the original kick but got a reprieve when it was revealed that Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz had called a timeout right before the snap. The sophomore kicker took advantage of his second opportunity, splitting the uprights to lift Iowa State (1-2) to its first win of the season and just its third in the last seven meetings with Iowa (2-1).
Sam B. Richardson had a solid game for the Cyclones, going 25-of-37 for 255 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. The Hawkeyes' Jake Rudock finished 16-of-24 for 146 yards and an interception, although he joined teammate Mark Weisman (16 carries, 49 yards) in scoring a rushing touchdown.
Rudock's 5-yard touchdown run put Iowa up 14-3 late in the first half and the score held until Richardson's 1-yard TD strike to E.J. Bibbs midway through the third. Richardson's 27-yard scoring throw to DeVondrick Nealy gave Iowa State its first lead with 7:33 to play in the contest, but Iowa marched down the field and tied it on Marshall Koehn's 44-yard kick.
The decisive drive for the Cyclones was an 11-play, 51-yard drive that included a pair of third-down conversions, including one on which Iowa was called for holding. The Hawkeyes initially used a methodical 16-play, 55-yard drive to open the scoring late in the first quarter with Weisman's 1-yard TD serving as the exclamation point.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Ray Hamilton (two catches, 41 yards) led Iowa in receiving, while Allen Lazard (five grabs, 53 yards) paced Iowa State. ... Entering the game, Netten had been 3-of-7 of 40-plus yards. He also made a 47-yarder in the second quarter on Saturday. ... The Cyclones managed just 82 yards on 26 carries, led by Aaron Wimberly (11 carries, 33 yards).
