Ryan Borucki struck out seven in eight shutout innings, and Danny Jansen, Kevin Pillar and Aledmys Diaz homered as the visiting Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Baltimore Orioles 5-0 Monday night.

Borucki (4-4) held the Orioles to three hits and one walk in matching his career-long start. The Blue Jays won their third in a row in the opener of a three-game series.

Toronto (68-82) leads the season series 13-4 over the Orioles (43-107), who have equaled their club record for most losses in a season.

Evan Phillips (0-1), whose only previous start as a professional was at Triple-A last year, was used as an "opener" by the Orioles. In two innings, he allowed three runs and three hits.

Phillips, part of the trade that sent Kevin Gausman and Darren O'Day to the Atlanta Braves on July 31, had four relief appearances with Atlanta and four with Baltimore before Monday.

The Blue Jays scored three runs in the second inning. Pillar doubled with two outs and scored on a single by Rowdy Tellez. Jansen followed with his second homer of the season.

Sean Gilmartin replaced Phillips for the third inning. He allowed a one-out single, then retired his next 13 batters before Pillar hit his 14th homer of the season in the seventh inning.

After striking out Tellez for the second out of the seventh, and his third strikeout of his outing, Gilmartin was replaced by Cody Carroll.

Borucki pitched around two singles in the third with the help of a double play. He allowed a leadoff single in the fourth, then retired seven in a row before walking Cedric Mullins in the sixth. The rookie left-hander retired his final eight batters.

Diaz, who entered the game as a defensive replacement at third base, hit his career-best 18th homer of the season with two outs in the ninth. It was the only hit allowed by Carroll, who struck out four in 2 1/3 innings.

Toronto's Tim Mayza struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth.

The game was delayed 30 minutes at the start by rain.
