The New York Yankees will try to continue their perfect start to the season as they visit the Arizona Diamondbacks in an interleague matchup tonight.
New York (4-0) opened the season with a four-game road sweep of the Houston Astros. Arizona (3-1) won its opening series as well, defending its National League championship by beating the Colorado Rockies in three of four.

After a severely disappointing 2023 season, the New York Yankees couldn’t be happier with how 2024 has started. New York flashed excellent pitching and a deep lineup, going 4-0 for the first time since 2003.
The biggest contributor to the Yankees hot start has been Juan Soto, who went 9-for-17 with a homer in the series with the Astros. Yet it’s not as though New York was running up the score. The Yankees only averaged 5.25 runs per game against Houston, instead relying on their pitching, which held the Astros to just 2.75 runs per game.
The Arizona Diamondbacks got off to a solid start themselves, winning three of four from the Rockies at home. Arizona took advantage of a weak Colorado pitching staff to score 32 runs during the four-game series. However, it’s worth noting that 16 of those runs came in the opener, after which the scoring barrage slowed down a bit.
Tonight, we’re dealing with two largely untested starters in Luis Gil and Ryne Nelson. Gil hasn’t pitched in nearly two years, while Nelson was underwhelming in 2023, having trouble generating strikeouts. Both pitchers are young and developing, and it’s difficult to know what to expect from them coming into the 2024 season.
Neither of these teams has faced the opposing starter before, which should give the pitchers a slight edge tonight. I’m not suggesting these teams won’t score tonight, but the total is set far too high given what we’ve seen this year and the unfamiliarity with the starters.

If the scoring isn’t out of control in tonight’s game, then that suggests a close game between two quality teams. Even if they don’t end the Yankees’ early season win streak tonight, I trust the Diamondbacks to keep it close at home and cover the run line.
Still, the player I have the most confidence in generating offense tonight comes from New York. Soto hit .529 against the Astros and should be able to come up with at least one hit to bring home our same-game parlay tonight.
