Caesars Entertainment expanded its portfolio on Monday as it accepted its first sports wager in Oregon.
Caesars sportsbook can now accept retail wagers in Oregon thanks to its partnership with the Coquille Indian Tribe in Coos Bay.
Key Takeaways
- Caesars is one of four retail sports betting odds providers in Oregon.
- Visitors of the casino-resort can bet on Caesars’ odds using branded kiosks.
The ceremonial first wager was submitted at a self-service betting kiosk at the tribe’s leading gaming and hospitality destination, Ko-Kwel Casino Resort in Coos Bay. In a festive twist, the bet was placed on the 30th anniversary of the property, formerly known as The Mill Casino.
“We remain committed to supporting Indian gaming, and we’re proud to partner with the Coquille Indian Tribe to enhance their guest experience,” said Eric Hession, president of Caesars Digital, in a company announcement.
“Bringing our sports wagering offering to a new jurisdiction for the first time is always significant, and we know offering our expansive menu of sports wagering markets will undoubtedly enhance the exceptional experience that the Coquille Indian Tribe provides to its guests.”
Caesars is now the third national sports betting brand with a presence in Oregon, joining BetMGM, which offers limited online and full retail sports betting at Spirit Mountain Casino, and DraftKings, the state’s only full-service online sports betting licensee.
Ko-Kwel Casino Resort is also one of four retail Oregon sports betting locations in the Beaver State. Alongside Spirit Mountain Casino (BetMGM), Three Rivers Casino Resort, and Chinook Winds Casino Resort, it first launched retail wagering in 2019 with the help of odds supplier Betgenius.
Mill Casino says it was the “first casino in Southern Oregon to offer sports betting.”
Expanding the repertoire
The Coquille Indian Tribe believes Caesars will help build the experience of guests at its famed casino.
“We are proud to have this iconic gaming brand join us, as both brands have represented excellence in the industry for decades,” said Margaret Simpson, CEO of the Coquille Economic Development Corporation. “This partnership aligns perfectly with our commitment to advancing gaming opportunities and enhancing guest satisfaction.
“We are excited to collaborate with such a distinguished brand and look forward to creating even more memorable sports wagering experiences for our guests.”
The new Caesars-branded kiosks allow patrons to bet on a wide variety of markets, including the traditional majors, player props, live betting lines, and futures. College sports betting is also restricted to retail locations, although college player props are not in the catalog of available bets.
Protecting against problem gambling
Caesars’ announcement included a note regarding the company’s attitude toward responsible gambling.
According to the release, Caesars in 1989 became the first commercial casino company to deal with problem gambling by creating a responsible gaming program known as Project 21.
Oregon has taken a robust approach to dealing with problem gambling, including the Oregon Health Authority allocating roughly $7.5 million annually to the identification and treatment of problems, the creation of the Gambling Regulation Committee in the state House of Representatives, and various problem gambling resources.
