Conservatives use the word elite to describe university professors, bureaucratic lawyers, etc. Basically, the type of people who will tell you raising the min wage is good because a study done by "so and so" says it's good. When we use the word "elite" it isn't a compliment.
We prefer the type of people who are "hard working, smart" people as opposed to "elite, smart" people. Those are the type of people who will say raising the min wage isn't a good idea because they actually work in the business world, they have to maintain budgets, and will see the negative results first hand.
Elite smart people, for the most part, were business majors who went into education, politics, community organizing, etc, and quote papers by other elite smart people to justify their findings. They think they know what's best for the rest of us. I tend to side with the people in the business world since they are actually doing it.
Another example is those same elite smart people who designed Obamacare. Just like in the business world, when it comes to healthcare I am going to side with the healthcare professionals that went to school for years (doctors, nurses, etc) as opposed to a professor that received his degree in Economics.

I have average to below-average intelligence so this is my way of trying to lessen its importance.
