Wasn't that Blues / Hawks game electric last night? An epic battle that went into 2 OT. There were other big games on last night, but none more important for the NHL than this one. Cameras rolling, crowd cheering, crowd jeering, U.S t.v. execs watching, gary bettman in attendance way past his bedtime and smiling. Yes all the movers and shakers were there and they certainly didn't leave disappointed. I began my thoughts on the Blues and the NHL's intentions last year as some of my fellow enthusiasts probably remember. But i erred by overlooking one very crucial component that is absolutely fundamental for any team before being given.. errrr.. "awarded" the Stanley Cup. That component is MARKETABILITY. U.S t.v. execs demand it. The bar has been raised and it is no longer a given that the only prerequisites for a team to win the cup is to be based in the U.S and struggling for attendance as in the past. Now the team has to have "that guy" the NHL and media can exploit and use to increase fan interest south of the 49th. 2010 Cup winners, there was enigmatic cabbie punching bad boy Buffalo native Patrick Kane, 2011 gave us the polarizing 37 yr old Flint Michigan native Tim Thomas, 2012 U.S.Olympic silver medalist and Connecticut native Jonathan Quick, 2013 Patrick Kane again (the Hawks still had debt on their arena to pay). The 2014 champions will feature not only the media jewel and Seattle native TJ Oshie, team captain and Minneapolis native David Backes, but also East Lansing American Olympic hero Ryan Miller. When the Blues made the LATERAL move and traded proven playoff goalie Halak and acquired unproven playoff goalie Miller, the stage was set. The Blues have major debt on the 19,150 seat Scottrade Center which often sits half empty and struggles to attract fans. gary will make good with his partners and SIGNIFICANTLY increase the value of this almost bankrupt team. Currently worth league worst $150 million, it will increase to $300 million by seasons end and more importantly give hockey media presence in the Midwest for future endeavours (i.e Kansas). Just look at this winning formula and what it did for the Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins. Almost last in league attendance and almost broke franchises are now financially stable and playing to sellout crowds. The good news for Leaf fans is that they have some of the required components. Tim Lieweke, James Van Riemsdyk and Phil Kessel are a good start. Now all they need to do is have fans not attend games and go broke and you never know what 2045 will bring.

What are you talking about man? It's all just coincidence that for the most part only Canadian teams won the Cup until the little attorney trained by crooked NBA boss david stern was appointed boss of the NHL. From that point forward with a team in L.A being GIFTED (by american ref kerry fraser) a birth in the finals instead of a toronto, montreal stanley cup that virtually no americans would have watched, followed by a team from NEW YORK winning their first cup since 1940 with the help of some amazing calls in a 7 game series and a Canadian team never again winning the cup from that point forward. A mighty ducks movie the same season he starts, a san jose franchise being awarded, the leafs being ROBBED by kerry fraser and the kings being PLACED into the finals and all three things raising interest in California to an all time high, which has led to hundreds of rinks being built in California and a Cup also for those Mighty Ducks along the way, and now NHL players actually being drafted out of California who were raised just after all that stuff with their dads being brand new hockey fans placing them into hockey.
I could go on and on and talk about the Martin Gelinas goal and why the NHL chose to not go to video review o even look at it despite it looking like it went in and therefore giving the cup to Tampa Bay instead of Calgary who actually probably deserved it.
We could go on and on but remember we are the crazy ones for thinking dirty, ruthless billionaires who care about nothing but money and bettering their business and financial uptake, could be anything but honest and forthright in their actions when it comes to the success of their BUSINESS which is the NHL.
Might be the Blues this season, we have both been calling this for the same reason for the last couple of seasons and Ryan Miller certainly is that new AMERICA STAR to promote for the new lords of hockey but we do have some other nice stories within the league so we shall see. The Blues can still always be next year or the year after they are young and not going anywhere. It does look ripe though.
There are a few good stories in Uncle Gary's soap opera. His crooked mentor David Stern has nothing on him in the NBA these days as far as giving the people what they want, well the people that matter financially anyway.
You just had to get me going again huh buddy?

You lost me at "electric"...so, just who is perpetrating this scheme? The majority of the players in the league are Canadian, and they just want a ring...I doubt any are tanking for the "good of the game"...

Who needs players? There are FOUR humans that work for the NHL on the ice that can control any game as much as they want.

I figured someone would go there...but Power Plays aren't the same as free throws...and with today's technology and media scrutiny, you can only call (or miss) so much...

You can call and miss tons, every single game commentators themselves express wonderment (even though they are not supposed to) at calls and non calls, what is a penalty one moment is not one just minutes later. Last night the avalanche players were holding and pulling down players on the wild left right and centre due to the avs being a very poor puck possession team (only oilers, sabres and panthers are worse in that category) and no one says anything about it. It was horrendous. In a few of the games I have seen players pulled right down while breaking in on scoring chances and no call made, and then they will call something almost completely phantom minutes later, we could go on and on. Maybe they are all just that completely stupid and blind? But if so shouldn't they be fired if they are that lost at their jobs?
Anyway these convos go on all the time here. We all see and think differently so no point beating it up anymore. I was just chiming in and agreeing with my friend at the top for fun because he like myself gets all riled up about it. I respect your thoughts on it all, whatever they may be and goodluck with all your plays. Me and this thread will now part ways.

By the way old Clarence "Lumpy" Rutherford rocked it with the Beaver
No arguing here...just an opinion...we see missed calls all the time, but in a 7 game series, you'd be risking a "Tim Donaghy" scandal if it was looking too one-sided...
Yeah, Lumpy was great...always remember the episode when he asked his old man if he was watching his ball game, and when the old man said he just got there, Lumpy significantly "embellished" his batting stats....had to love Eddie Haskell too!

What makes that non-call in game 6 of the Maple Leafs/Kings game even more fishy was even though there was only one ref back then the ref had the discretion to consult the linesman for high sticking violations. So essentially three officials did not see anything when Gretzky high sticked Gilmour?
That game 6 is the 2nd biggest sports conspiracy imo only behind the 1991 final four game between duke and unlv.
