Have never been a huge Colts fans for various reasons...

But with all the talk, never forget about the ramifications of having a GM like Ryan Grigson.  He single handedly put one of the worst offensive lines ever in front of an elite talent, and probably ruined a career for a potential all-timer.  I watched most of the Colts games, and when Grigson was here it was truly painful to watch what Luck went through.  Most of us here in Indy felt bad for Luck, and even though this retirement is a shock now, it won't be a surprise when we look back on the history of Luck.

Look no farther than trading a first round pick for Trent Richardson.  A pick that could've turned into an offensive lineman.  We get rid of Grigson, and within a couple years we get a Center and a Left Tackle that will be here for a decade if they stay healthy, and our O-Line goes from a laughingstock to a top tier lineup.

GM is too important of a job to screw up, and I still can't believe the Colts went with a guy like Grigson.  People behind the scenes in the media and former co-workers of Grigson said that it was laughable that he even got an interview, let alone the job.  Irsay has had his issues with things like, ya know, I don't know.... massive pill issues and a dead girl in his condo...  but he does seem to have a decent track records of hires.  Maybe 70-75% success rate, which is not bad in the NFL...but his hire of Grigson probably ruined Lucks career, and has to be a huge stain on his football legacy.

All that being said, Luck was always a bit of an odd guy around here.  Always kept to himself, didn't do too many public things, and was really robotic in his interviews.  But the thing I always thought that was different about him from guys like Peyton, Brady, Brees, Rodgers, and others... he never seemed obsessed with the process of football.  He always worked hard, there's no doubt.  But most people I talk to around Indy agree that he always knew he had another life outside of football.  Crazy smart and incredible degree from Stanford...he was a guy that didn't need football in his life to exist.  Those other guys need football.  Those other guys will fight through injuries until their bodies can't do football anymore, regardless of the long-term health consequences.  Luck is just a different guy.  And honestly, I don't think he regrets retiring and I don't think he'll ever come back.

A guy just made a decision to be a happy and healthy father to a kid and wife, and good for him.

But personally, this ranks up there with some of the all time Sports What If's, and I really hate we were deprived to see him reach his all time potential in football.  I think it would've been fun.

Thank you for offering your perspective, very interesting read. At only 29, I originally thought he would step away for a couple years, reset, and come back. But after reading this, the more I think you’re right. He’s a different cat, and probably won’t be around football for a while. I could see him being one of those guys where people are like “where is Andrew Luck these days?”

It would be a 30 for 30.  Except he's not very polarizing.  If they did it in 10 years, nobody would care.  Including him...lol

Any insight on why the Indy fans booed him at the end of the game tonight ? The guy took severe beatings for that team and its fans. Very unfortunate.

Yeah.  I have thoughts.

1.  Everything is falling into place for this team going into this season.  Luck is healthy (we thought), we got our coach (Reicht), our O-Line looks great, our GM has been brilliant with his picks...we are one of the few teams in the NFL who looks like they have a bright future.... and Luck sinks the whole thing.  Lot of frustration.

2.  Those people at the game tonight probably paid premium money for season tickets (nothing like the nonsense in NY), but still...if you're there late in a pre-season game, you've paid money for tickets, and now your season tickets aren't worth much.

3.  They announced the retirement of Andrew Luck during a game where Andrew Luck was on the sidelines.  What PR team in the world would recommend this?  And this goes back to a big moment in the organization losing this fanbase in 2009.

Colts were undefeated, and were facing the Jets.  Peyton and the players wanted the undefeated season.  The fans wanted the undefeated season.  Honestly, the national media probably wanted it because it's a great story.  What does the organization do?  Week 15 after going 14-0, Irsay and Polian decide to bench the starters, but not at the beginning of the game, but after halftime.  Right after beer sales shut off.  After everyone paid for parking.  After everyone paid for concessions.  They lose in the Super Bowl but the fans felt a real disrespect from the team.  They pour their money and support into the team, and the team basically tells them to f*ck off.

So cut to tonight, the Colts fans have again given their money and support to the team through the bad times, and now it looks like good times are upon us...and it gets taken away.  It's brutal for the fan base.

4.  Also... Andrew Luck was never a real part of the city and organization.  Not in the way Peyton was here (He's got a freakin hospital named after him here).  Not in the way Brady is in New England.  Rodgers is in Green Bay.  Big Ben in Pittsburgh.  Luck was never interested in carrying a city and fanbase.  People in Indy don't have a real connection to him.

I'm serious when I say this... John Elway refused to play for the Colts.  Peyton loved the city and team and fans.  Around here, Luck will be compared more the Elway than to Peyton as the years move on.  He quit.  Plain and simple.

As for your comment about very unfortunate?  I'm not with you on that one.  He's a big boy.  He can take being booed.  People may regret it later on, but he's not going to regret retiring.  He made a decision, he knew the consequences about doing it when he did it, he'll be fine.  Dude had his internal organs lacerated.  He can take a booing from row 2.

I will say this... And I may live to regret this opinion, but I'll say it now, and you can blast me if I end up being wrong.

Me and a few people I trust in the sports industry really like Jacoby Brissett.  Not as in a once in a generational talent, but someone who can step into this role, take control of the franchise once he's not a backup, but the unquestioned starter.  He's mobile, decently accurate, and he's never had an offensive line like this one as a starter.

He's on the last year of his rookie deal, and here's an article talking about how he could be one of the most sought after free agents in 2020.  The Colts saw something in him, and behind a dog sh*t offensive line in 2017 he performed well.

https://fansided.com/2019/08/14/jacoby-brissett-free-agency-2020/

I like him.  I think he'll be better than most expect this year.  Let me see the new O/U numbers.  I'm thinking there is going to be value on the Over as well as the masses overreacting to Luck leaving and forgetting the Colts have a great O-Line, and improved defense and Brissett being better than most think.  Don't forget about motivation with these guys being told they suck without Luck.  When the public Zigs with betting in the NFL...you want to be Zaggin.  Don't overract too much to this news.  Look for the value.

Don't have the full story yet, but from what I gathered from Adam Schefter is that Luck had a press conference scheduled tomorrow to make the announcement but ESPN (assuming it was Schefter) got a hold of the story and broke it during the game.   Definitely not what Luck wanted and a shitty move in my opinion by ESPN/Schefter if that's what really happened

Schefter doesn't get that info without someone within the Colts or Lucks camp wanting him to.

I'm in video production.  Here's what they wanted.  Probably what is called the "Hero Shot".  When a guy makes a big shot in basketball the director wants a shot of the "hero"...the guy who made the basket.  Or after a touchdown pass, they want the "hero shot".  A close up on the guy who caught the touchdown pass and the guy who threw the pass.

They need a "Hero Shot" of the last time Andrew Luck runs off the football field.  Those clips will be used on all the major networks over the next few days.  Look up the clip.  I count at least 25 still photographers and videographers.  It's a meaningless preseason game.  No reason all those people are there unless it's planned.  They knew what was happening.  They just didn't plan for the Boooooing.

Here's a 30 for 30.

2011 CFB season Andrew Luck and RG3. RG3 wins the Heisman because the last televised game of the season he puts on an awesome display amongst " college players." We all saw that RG3 was prone to injury in his CFB career and would not hold up in the NFL. Meanwhile Andrew Luck was compared to John Elway and could run like a RB that linebackers and secondaries were reluctant to take on which probably didn't help his longevity; put that on management for the lack of protection and his need to leave the pocket. Luck put his head down and tried to run guys over as he did in college. Russel Wilson is shifty and makes you miss which he did in college that year.

2011 NFL season; Colts, Vikings, and Washington are the worst teams in the league and in the running for the top draft pick. Christmas Eve if I remember correctly #69 Jared Allen and the Vikings decide they want to beat the Redskins and idiotically remove themselves from the Andrew Luck lottery. Yes they had drafted Christian Ponder the year before; but Andrew Luck was a once and a lifetime athlete. Had the Vikings lost, they would have had the opportunity to get Luck. Don't know if Vikings GM would have pulled the trigger but...........Vikings and Luck's storyline would be a lot different had Vikings lost that December game.

Two of the most disgusting feelings ever when watching the NFL:
Vikings beating Washington 2011 and "celebrating" like they were going to the Super Bowl while Luck was there for the taking and last years "no call" Rams and Saints. I did take the Falcons in that SB debacle by the way.

Go back, and check the laundry list of injuries Luck (write your own punchline here) suffered that would sideline any of us for 6 months. How do you think you'd do?an_brick

Ok, bro marinate in this...karma..coming from a 60 year old who grew up in Baltimore and lived and died with the Baltimore Colts and saw Irsay's idiot father lie continuously for 2 years about staying in 1981-1983 and surreptitiously left at midnight..from a city that sold out every game, see the movie Diner..

But no, not good enough for your Indy brethren, you get Manning when my new transferred team the Chargers are left with Leaf, and the one down year you have from Peyton's weird neck injury leaves you with the best #1 QB since him in 1998..but we all know one should back off with winnings in gambling but clearly Jim Irsay born with a silver spoon to begin with, pees all over that with his abuse, hiring Grigson, not protecting him, and yes, stupid decision to blow the perfect season...unfortunate for the fans in the moment but YOU have had plenty of LUCK...figuratively and literally..

You were given fools to begin with, a great lesson in life is know who you are...stop crying, Bengals fans, Chargers fans have equally inept ownership..ask yourself one question..would Luck still be playing with the Patriots today if they drafted him and didn't have Brady?

Not sure how or why fans can be angry at him.  In his interview, he said in 2016 he was miserable all season long, unable to practice or do anything all week long and onbly play in the games.  He said he told himself he would not allow that to ever happen again.....he realized this season would be the same thing and decided to walk away from the game like he promised.  Not sure how fans can be angry...

I will repeat the very first sentence of my post.

I've never been a huge Colts fan for various reasons.

Don't include me with the rest of the Colts fan base.

Lot of frustration.2.  Those people at the game tonight probably paid premium money for season tickets (nothing like the nonsense in NY), but still...if you're there late in a pre-season game, you've paid money for tickets, and now your season tickets aren't worth much.3.  They announced the retirement of Andrew Luck during a game where Andrew Luck was on the sidelines.  What PR team in the world would recommend this?  And this goes back to a big moment in the organization losing this fanbase in 2009.Colts were undefeated, and were facing the Jets. It's brutal for the fan base.4.

Holy crap this is some nice insight!  I never see this from Colts fans in regards to defending the booing.  I also did not know Luck wasn't the guy in Indy behind the scenes.  Really shocking and surprising this is the first time I'm hearing about this as I've never heard a single Colts fan mention it in all these years.

No doubt the public will overreact to the Luck news while the AFC South is open and I think Colts & Brissett can still get to 8 or 9+ wins and potentially win the division. Colts check a lot of boxes and if they play to their potential and Brissett is solid which I think he will be, and they win their division there might be some value on Frank Reich right now for coach of the year.

There’s obviously a lot of season left but Jags now too, with a top defense and upgrade at QB, should take advantage of this opportunity and make a move for receivers and could be competitive as well

I also think there’s something to be said about teams rallying in situations like this when one of their stars gets injured in this case Luck retiring and that motivating them through this like you said. Seriously considering adding Colts season wins over I think it’s at 6.5 now

Good lord, if it’s 6.5 I’ll take the over.  They lost Luck not the entire starting roster.
