Slow week for me and thought this would be an interesting topic to discuss and relate it to taking the 14 or laying the 14 this sunday
i havent watched every pats game (probably 6-7 of them) but i know there are certain things that make them uncomfortable...not neccesarily beatable b/c no one has done that yet
excellent pass rush - the 3-4 worked well against the colts but what is brady's history vs it? will he be able to hit quick slants all day to negate the blitzing
RB as a receiver - we saw addai and westbrook give the pats trouble earlier this year...LT/Sproles are perfect for this role
versatile running game - LT, Turner, and Sproles are more than capable of having a good day
physical defense - the chargers have that as well as excellent corners
i'm not saying that they can beat the pats in foxboro but lest we forget this team went 14-2 last year and took a month to get used to norv and the offense this year....they've been on a tear since

You need a team that scores almost every drive, either a field goal or touchdown, and can hang till the last minute of the game. Ex: Indy and NE last year in the playoffs. A shootout till the very last second. NE defense is good, but not that good. You can definitely score on them the key is how often. Brady is relentless in scoring points on every single drive and very limited on turnovers. San Diego doesn't have a chance in this game, Indy practically gave the game away to them last week. NE is going to shit on San Diego this weekend.

In one way, you would think the Chargers could hang close with the Pats because they run the ball and kill clock, on a average Pat run defence. San Diego corners are physical and are creating turnovers. Then on the other hand , are the Chargers starters to banged up. Colts had 3 redzone turnovers , that could of been 21 pts for the colts and a blow out.
If its real cold and snowing, would the weather be an advantage to the Pats considering the Pats will not score as much.

not score every drive so much as then to keep the ball out of the pats hands. they have way to many weapons on offense. if someone could run the ball and get effective passing and then cover moss and play physical with him and pressure brady they could win. i think baltimore had the right game plan they just got screwed over by the refs.

The Giants gave NE some trouble but most teams find it difficult to create turnovers against NE.
Indy did a great job creating TOs and should have won that game. If Rivers has a good game, SD could keep this game close.
Turnovers are key for any game, especially for an error-free tema like the Pats. SD has league's best turnover differential - that is their specialty...

Why does everyone still think that NE is going to blow teams out by 4-5 touchdowns. Maybe teams are starting to figure out how to defend against the Pats? Maybe SD's D created all those mistakes from the Colts?

There's been many times where I've seen a team that won because of mistakes by the opposing side, come back the next week and win again, big. Winning breeds confidence and attitude, which the Chargers have as well as a tremendous amount of talent and to their credit, they never gave up against the Colts. They are extremely physical, and have a great offensive line, as they manhandled the Colts D, a defense that was regarded in the top echelon of the league! Anybody that can beat Indy at home, can beat anybody as far as I'm concerned. This is by no means an endorsement to play San Diego, but they certainly showed me something last week. Turnovers are the key I think. Brady is in a groove and the Pats Mulroney had his best game of the season vs. the Jags, so there's another wrinkle in the capping puzzle.

This is totally true the opponent needs to score TDs on every drive have you noticed in the game versus the Jags ... If they could have keep up scoring TD to keep it close with the Pats they had somewhat of a chance ... but once they kicked that FG they felt behind and never got back since NE just kept scoring. The only thing is if the opponent kick a FG they MUST stop the Pats or only allow a FG to have better chances to win against the Pats.

The game plan to beat the Pats is very similar to the one Parcells used against the Bills back in the Super Bowl when he used Anderson to control the clock for 40 minutes. lots of sustained drive that chew up yards and clock so that you have numerous 3rd and 1s and 2.
To sustain the drives you need to pound the ball on the Pats - their rush defense is very mediocre and LB (outside of Vrabel) is suspect. Yes, I know that seems wierd to say but the Pats offense has covered for a ton of issues the defense has. Seau and Bruschi can't cover quick rbs so I would utilize Sproles in space with short wheel routes and quick dump offs. Force those guys to cover from sideline to sideline. Also AD has some trouble with Gates so I would spread him out and see what the Pats do - cover him with a cb then just passes and runs to the side. cover gates with AD or other LB - run at them.
On defense, your best player is your offense and keeping them off the field. Further, you can't just sit in the same base defense all day like the Jags did - you shouldn't blitz every down but you can't just rush four and expect to keep everything in front of you. You need to utilize Merriman and Phillips on the edges and force Brady to take what you give him. The safeties and CBs need to keep everything in front of them and you can't miss tackles.
To be honest, I don't know why NFL's don't do this but I would borrow heavily from 3-3-5 teams in run in college - I would think of it as what teams did against the run and shoot. I would rather have Maroney beat me than Brady. I would dare the Pats to run the ball b/c I have feeling they don't want to at all. I would use Williams to try to eat up 2 blockers and let my lbs fly to the ball. I would then have 5 dbs on the field and make sure I am very physical on the LOS with Moss, Stallworth and Welker. Make the refs call holding or PI - b/c at some point they'll stop throwing the flag - just like the Pats did to the colts back in '04. Lastly, I would put weddle on Welker and try to limit his touches and getting first downs. Welker is the key to the offense and if you can limit is ability to catch 5 yd patterns and turn them into 1st downs you can beat the pats -

will he be able to hit quick slants all day to negate the blitzing
To me, that is the key to the game..
The Chargers can and will put up the points because they have the talent to do it. The Chargers will win the Special Teams battle.
Playing the Patriots comes down to: Can you keep up with them? I believe the Chargers will score points but how many points will they give up? Well Antonio Cromartie will be able IMO to neglect Randy Moss and "the big play" but the wasnt a huge factor in New England's game vs the Jaguars.
If Brady has success with those slants and dump offs it will offset the Chargers blitz and containing Brady comes down to being able to hit him and disrupting his rythm. Good coverage which I think the Chargers are capable of having will allow Merriman and Phillips to attack the QB but who is going to deny those 5 yard passes from becoming bigger?
I'm not sure that answered any questions, but as a Charger fan that is what I fear the most. Peyton Manning had a great deal of success with those short passes but the Chargers forced the turnovers when it counted.

KOAJ- Somehow you preached and conviced yourself that the Colts were 9 or 10 points or more better than the Chargers last week, even though the trends heavily favored the Bolts. I even heard people saying the Colts are better than the Patriots...which of course is absurd.
Have you not learned? We have the best running back and top 2, maybe #1 TE in the league. Chargers have learned from their mistakes the last 2 games against NE: DONT TURN THE BALL OVER!!!!!!
Chargers have taught us in the past they can be shakey in big game situations. However, I think they have turned a corner. In my opinion, last week was as big as it gets. Take it from someone who follows this team with a microscope. This is the Superbowl for the Chargers, and they will come out with everything they have.
Either way, not sure how anyone in the right mind can lay 2 touchdowns in an AFC playoff game. The Chargers deserve more credit than they have gotten to this point.

I want to say this game is gonna be a blow out NE by 20+. My reasoning behind this is that the injuries to rivers and LT are gonna show up as soon as they go down 7 points. I dont think those two will have it in them to play through being hurt once they are down points which was seen in the indy game. I beleive its gonna be a take over by the Pats early in the game prolly drive down the field and score on the first drive like they usually do and from then on the leaders of the chargers will just eventually give up. The only way i see this game being close is if the chargers back ups step up and have a huge game, i just dont see any big numbers coming from LT or Rivers.

you're 100% right on...i underestimated the 3-4's effect on Peyton Manning
but if you look at it another way...2 red zone interceptions and a marvin harrison fumble on the 20 on his way to make the game 14-0. if marvin doesnt fumble there its a different game
i also underestimated the ability of the chargers o line and the absence of freeney

Your RB is going to be playing with a hyperextended knee. That means that he is not the best RB in this GAME, much less the league right now, and your TE stubbed his toe and is playing like a box, also leaving him in the position of not being the best TE in this game.
This doesn't mean I don't think the Chargers can cover, but if it turns out to be Volek, Turner, and no Gates, it could turn into a route.
