"Worse, he was inexplicably behind one player in the FIBA world championships (and this was said to irk him privately)....
Mason Plumlee.
You
think he won't come to play tonight down low, for a contract, against a
guy in FIBA who took his minutes, against a team that struggles against
big men underneath?"
This is really, really good stuff Scal. Little things like this are not really appreciated or seen unless you are a student of the game and the psychology of basketball.
Thanks Kap. I expect the veterans of this site and of the capping game to appreciate the finer points of a write up when presented with them.

nice,scalabrine.....im warming to it....you have an incredible knack to seek out the games that sneak under the radar.i had just brushed over this one without thinking much of it,but was impressed with the effort shown in 2 tough road venues by the pistons...van gundy is UNDOUBTEDLY the X-factor here..the roster features many of the same lolly-gagging,inconsistent,lazy malcontents from the past but stan won't take that shi.t from anyone..they know they will be shown the pine, then the door, if full effort and discipline isnt shown....its also a bonus catching this team before theyve mentally quit on their season, which normally takes place about a third of the way in wen they realise they have zero chance of sniffing the playoffs once more.
pistons dont have the sort of athletic,dynamic,multi-skilled talent that the modern nba requires....but then luckily the nets do not either...and i think detroit is better equipped to play the style of game they do,pounding inside hopefully as you say....we can only hope and pray josh smith notices other guys on the court and is willing to pass up those awful long jumpers in favour of playing to his teams strengths...this is where van gundy comes in once again.
hes turned around similarly over-looked and marginalised groups in the past, turning them into highly respected hard-working units...and i like him to do it again.....theres nothing quite like having your coach wield the power /influence in his duel role as your "boss" of sorts also..he will carry a big stick and i reckon sum of these knuckle-heads will see it and be wary.

@jriv - it's a fair point but the pistons have their home opener, have lost twice, and their strength is the nets Achilles heel, rebounding and in the paint offense.
All that is a fair counter to one highly disturbing blowout int boston (at least the Knicks got blown out by an eastern conference finals hopeful in the bulls in comparison!)

Great points as a second cap to this thread. I don't disagree with any of this.

Smith isn't the problem. He just needs to be coached correctly. The dude can be a terror defensively. They need to trade Monroe for some wing depth.
he's seemed moody and sporadically motivated most of his career, not sure how that can be fixed...,maybe van gundy is the guy to do it,who knows??..he said all the rite things wen coming to the pistons about turning over a new leaf but look how its turned out....its a shame cos at his best he is one heck of a 2-end,all-purpose player....a "poor man's" lebron.
no doubt, they DESPERATELY need help in guard spots and shooting in general

@tigers - i do want to not monroe will be coming off the bench (probably as a punishment not to just thrust him into the starting lineup after a DUI). But if he excels, and he should, he'll end up with close to starter's minutes. Still the prop, if interested should reflect the fact he's coming off the bench.
