Many fans, nitwit members of the media, along with distinguished and some not so distinguished sports bettors were shoveling dirt upon the Celtics after they crumbled in the 4th quarter of Game 4 on Monday night AND lost their best player to a serious injury. But on Wednesday night, the Celtics not only won to stay alive, they defeated the Knicks so thoroughly in the second half that they created a new narrative for many. Now we hear people saying that the Celtics can still do this, that they're maybe even better off (at least for now) without the "ballhog" Jayson Tatum. We now have people doubting the Knicks, too. Many mentions of how they haven't clinched a playoff series on their home court since 1999. Knicks fans are worried today. They're hoping for the best but bracing for disappointment.
I don't think they have anything to worry about. I think they should be bracing to celebrate a glorious Knicks victory and a rematch against the Pacers for the right to advance to the NBA Finals.
We saw the Knicks successfully claw back in the second halves of Games 1 and 2 after falling behind by 20 points in the 3rd quarter of those games. But on Wednesday, things went differently. They weren't already in a double-digit hole at halftime. They were tied. The Celtics weren't already feeling comfortable sitting on a big 3rd quarter lead. They were instead building one. The Celtics went from tied at the half to up 91-76 entering the 4th and then delivered the knockout blow, going up by 22.
The Knicks let it go. They basically let it go. OG Anunoby couldn't make a shot all night. Karl-Anthony Towns was limited to 29 minutes because of foul trouble. Jalen Brunson, who seems to average 56 minutes per game, only played 33 after fouling out with 7:19 to go, effectively ending any hope. It all seemed bad, but the way I see it this was actually good. The Knicks got steamrolled, and they let the Celtics have their big night, but that lopsided final score bodes poorly for Boston.
The Knicks lost by 25, so I wondered how have the Knicks fared after losing this season? Turns out, they fared well. The Knicks have gone 25-9 and 20-13 ATS after any loss this season, and that includes a perfect 3-0 SU & ATS in the playoffs. How about after a bad loss? After losing any game by 15 points or more, the Knicks have gone 10-2 and 8-4 ATS. Pretty good, but after losing by 15 points or more and then playing their next game at HOME, the Knicks went 6-0 and 5-1 ATS. Check it out...
After losing their season opener 132-109 in Boston, they won their home opener 123-98 over the Pacers (covered by 20.5).
After losing by 25 at home to the Thunder, they beat the Bucks 140-106 (covered by 29).
After losing by 17 at home to the T-Wolves, they beat the Hawks 119-110 (covered by 1.5).
After losing by 16 at home to the Lakers, they beat the Rockets 124-118 (missed the cover by 1 point).
After losing by 17 in Charlotte (without Brunson and Robinson by the way), they beat the Wizards 122-103 (covered by 3.5).
After losing by 22 at home to the Celtics in Game 3, they beat the Celtics 121-113 in Game 4 (covered by 13.5).
Also, the Knicks are a perfect 4-0 SU & ATS since March 22nd after losing any game by 15 or more points, winning those four games by an average of 13 points and covering by an average of 10.4 points.
I'm on the Knicks -2.5 -105.
