The Seattle Mariners and the Oakland Athletics meet for their second to last game of the 2011 season.
The Seattle Mariners are bound to make some moves in the coming weeks and at the very least they will find a direction that they are headed in. On Monday Miguel Olivo and Justin Smoak both homered and Dustin Ackley and Mike Carp had hits and scored as the Mariners scored four runs on eight hits. Starter Jason Vargas allowed five hits and a run over eight innings of work to get his 10thth save of the year. For Tuesday’s game Seattle starts Blake Beavan who has won his last two decisions. For the season Beavan has allowed 98 hits and 39 earned runs while striking out 38 over 92 innings of work. win and Brad League notched his 37
The Oakland Athletics will have plenty of time to see Billy Ball as their season will end on Wednesday. On Tuesday Hideki Matsui had two hits, Jemile Weeks had a hit and scored a run, and Coco Crisp had a hit and scored a run as the Athletics scored two runs on seven hits. On the mound Brandon McCarthy allowed eight hits and four earned runs while striking out six going the distance but taking his ninth loss on the year. For Tuesday’s game Oakland starts Trevor Cahill who wasn’t able to match his All Star season he had a year ago. For the season Cahill has allowed 210 hits and 96 earned runs while striking out 140 over 210 innings of work.
Seattle is 24-50 in their last 74 games overall, 34-68 in their last 102 against the A.L. West, and 1-4 in their last five games as a home favorite. Oakland is 18-41 in their last 59 road games, 0-4 in their last four game two of a series, and 8-17 in Cahill’s last 25 starts. Oakland is 2-6 in their last eight games in Seattle.
These are teams that simply don’t score a lot of runs and it’s a little late in the year to see that trend changing.
