Alright fellas, I'm close to buying a house (going to take a 2nd look tonight) and I have absolutely NOTHING to my name since I currently live at home. I'm a first time home buyer, and my dad has plans to throw a HUGE house warming party inviting friends and family. Being that I have nothing (I plan on getting a new bed and big screen as a gift to myself), do you think it's wise to register someplace for gifts? I don't want to sound greedy, but I have nothing to my name when it comes to household appliances. I'm sure plenty of people would be happy to get rid of old/used/past wedding gifts/stuff they don't use, so that would also work. There will be plenty of food, a keg, and yard games.

I don't think it's at all greedy or rude to get a gift list or gift registry going... It only makes sense and people know this. I mean, no one wants to end up with 10 crock pots.

Good points...it's not like I'm inviting people who wouldn't wanna help me out. Besides, free beer and food with a bunch of people should be worth a visit. Not to mention checking out the new house.
Alright Dave, I won't be registering for a blender

I completely agree gimme and I think that it is very smart to indicate what items you need. Hell I am sure every has an appliance, set of flatware, set of pots & pans, silverware, bedding, linens, towels, etc that they don't use or need. This is a very good idea if you ask me. Why buy new when slightly used will do? Being from Minnesota I am sure you will appreciate that last bit. Too bad you cannot qualify for the first time home buyers credit anymore (at least not for 2009) but BOL all the same.

Jesron- You got it...slightly used will do. That's a 2nd wind commercial? The free 8k would have been nice, but part of me thinks the sellers know that it's out there, so the price could be inflated. I also plan on finding out what they plan on leaving as far as furniture and appliances...they're moving to California in August. Thanks man!
Thanks for advice fellas, all this talk is getting me excited/nervous at the same time...it's a big investment, and lots of work.

you should work on finding a friend or someone with some common sense to talk you out of the biggest mistake you'll ever make.
why are you so hellbent on buying a house?
it's an infestment, not an investment
very expensive transaction costs to get into AND get out of a house.
What happens if you lose your job? Do you have 12+ months of savings to cover all living expenses?
What happens if house prices continue to fall for YEARS?
What happens if you meet a girl and she doesn't like the house, or wants you to move to a different area?
Mortgage interest deduction is always the big bullshit that people throw out there like you're missing out on something by renting.
look at it like this, first you have to earn a bunch of money to get federally taxed then, you have to pay an insane amount of MORTGAGE INTEREST from which to recieve the deduction for!!
If it's cheaper to rent a place, rent a place
if you can buy a place with 20% down payment, low interest rate, and for similar costs as renting, and the sale price is no more then 3x your annual income, and you intend on keeping the place FOREVER, then MAYBE then think about buying it.

You live in Minn. free beer, lounge chairs, fishing pole, and bait should do the trick. FWIW when I have a bash I rent porta-potties because I only want a minimal amount of people in my house and I WON'T HAVE TO CLEAN UP AFTER THEM. I do live on a lake which helps out though. Congrats.

yea i am supposed to rent port-o-jons for this years 4th of july bash, but i'd rather spend that money on an ice luge and that means doubling up the hard liquor order. i'm not made of money, guys piss outside, gals go inside but go easy on the septic! and no doing drugs in the house

You should definately ask if they are willing to leave furniture. I got the owners to leave a refridgerator, an older big screen tv, a desk, all surround sounds equipment (speakers/reciever)....and if they are moving far away they might not be real oppesed to leaving such things and maybe a couch or larger items....cant hurt to ask and if they think its helping the house sell they may let some stuff go....

I'm making a payment over 20% with the help of my dad so the payments are very reasonable. I might get a good buddy to be my roommate so my payments and utilities wouldn't add up to much. I don't plan on moving or losing my job anytime soon. I'm fortunate because my dad wants me to come and work for him whenever I feel it's time for a change. The sale price is more than 3X but after making a the down payment, it will be close. I just don't see the point in renting and flushing money away...it's like buying a brand new car
