Ice Bucket Challenge = narcissism masquerading as charity

Every time i flip the channel, i see one of these videos and to me, these people/celebrities just wants attention.  Some have good intentions, but most are clueless about what ALS is.  I have an aunt that passed away with this disease 8 years ago.  Nobody seemed to cared about it back then, but it's so trendy to "help cure a disease" now.

There was a shirt on TShirtHell a few years back that had a ribbon on it and said "I support whatever's trendy"

Relax is not a good counter argument.  Nobody ever says ok "i'll relax" or "that's a good point, i'll relax".  That's just a weak power trip statement.  Just like when a person say "everything is going to be ok".  Nobody ever believes that.  People say it just to look person.  Just like these fool throwing buckets of ice water over their heads.  They are primarily about getting attentions, getting PR, or feeling good about themselves because they "help somebody".  Want to help somebody?  Go help your neighbor, adopt a rescue dog, go volunteer.  Don't video taped yourself and broadcast to the world about helping others.  That just shows that your intent to help isn't the top priority.

I rather see people posting videos of them donating $100 to ALS. I wonder how many people know that if they do this challenge, they're supposed to donate $10. I bet most people don't have a clue about that. I hate how people are doing this just to be cool.

With that said...if they donate, then I have no problem with it. As of yesterday, the ALS Association has received $13.3 million since July 29th as compared to $1.7 million during the same period last year. That is amazing. And that is what it's all about. So while there are people doing it just to do it...social media has made this thing huge and celebrities passing it on and doing the challenge are also probably donating a "little" more than $10.

Of the $13million what is the % that ALS takes for Administrative(which like school budgets is mostly salaries)? What has the head of ALS done to light this YouTube fire and earn the 500,000+ salary this year but not get fired for incompetence by only getting 1.7million last year? He/she only hopes that ALS can gain status in the media of cancer research or higher education as grifts that don't tender the sppotlight or inquiry.

How ironic that Lou Gerhig died of Lou Gerhig Disease.

While it is great that many are donating to the cause, why do they have to pour a bucket of icewater of their heads and televise it? Why not just donate to the cause? It's because they really are trying to get the attention on themselves.

I don't care how many videos I have to watch, how many celebrities or sports stars take part (Whatever their motives are).  You can't argue with the numbers...and the donation amounts prove that it's been a success.  Read this, may change your perspective.  (Sorry for the link posting linesmen)

Unfortunately, someone simply donating $100 wouldn't catch on.  That's just the way of the world.  The actual "Ice Bucket" aspect is what creates this and how it catches on.  So is what it is.

As for your 2nd paragraph, you are spot on.  If 5 million people take part in the challenge and only 1 million donate (Whatever amount that may be)  It's still money being donated, which is the ultimate purpose.  So I have no problem in seeing celebrities, or sports stars taking part...or my neighbors across the street.  Yes, a lot of them may NOT be donating.  But if a friend of a friend see's the video and donates.  Mission accomplished.

I'm incredibly confused by your final comment. It's not like it was named Lou Gerhig's Disease before he got it. They called it that after BECAUSE of him. If it was Babe Ruth who died of it then it would have been called Babe Ruth's Disease.

And it's great that it's getting awareness like this. I rather people become aware of ALS because of this trend than it becoming famous because more and more people are getting diagnosed with it.

There's nothing we can do about how much goes to administrative...but I rather be hearing about donations than not, right? Whatever % of $13.3 million will still end up being more useful for ALS research than whatever % of $1.7 million.

Agree 100%. But if they want publicity for donating, let'em try and get it. As long as they're not doing anything harmful to anyone and ARE donating, I'm fine with it.

But celebrities are doing their part. Just look at Justin Bieber. I imagine nobody on here likes him but I think he challenged all of his twitter followers and we all know how his fan base is. And I checked his page and he's retweeting a bunch of them and I saw him retweet people who posted pictures of them donating. So when people take their insane popularity and following to help the cause, even better. 

Just go to Wikipedia's page on the Ice Bucket Challenge and see the list of celebrities (186 listed as of now which include entire teams listed as one) that have donated. Everyone from Oprah to Tony Romo to Vince McMahon to JLo, Lady Gaga and Bill Gates. Also, as of those same dates for this year, they've had 220,255 new donors. That's amazing.

100% correct.  I got challenged yesterday, and will do my part in the challenge and donate what I can.  And hope my friends do the same.  Hate it or love it, we're in a social media world now.  Easier to just accept it, and understand this for the time being is ultimately helping a good cause.

I don't see people donating for tuberculosis.  I guess they have to get celebrities to dump iced buckets of carrot juice to make it trendy.

It's because most people really don't give a crap about ALS but it's a "fun way" to get people talking about it. 

No one cares about breast cancer that hasn't been hurt from it but everyone wears pink for a whole damn month and the NFL and other major outlets broadcast the crap out of it for AWARENESS. 

This isn't any different. It's about raising awareness. Do I think it's silly and stupid? Yes. But does it seem to be raising awareness and generating some money for research to possibly find a cure? Yes. 

I agree, people should just donate money if they believe in a cause. BUT no one cares about the majority of these causes. Sadly, I am pretty sure that's a fairly accurate statement.

They wanna make it fun, they want recognition, they are donating money.  

If it bothers you don't watch.  Go relax and do something more enjoyable with your time than hating on people that are donating big money.  I'm sure there's other people that enjoy watching it.

The actual story behind is pretty cool...but I don't feel like someone should be "called out" to donate to a charity.  I also strongly feel as though 90% of the people doing the challenge either don't know to donate to ALS or don't know what ALS actually is.

Personally,  I will donate to those charities that directly affect myself or my family.  Right now, that is cancer, and I am proud to donate to the Jimmy Fund and the Jimmy V Foundation every year.

Growing up, you probably were never forced to think critically for yourself.   This is evidenced by the logic that you used.

So voicing your opinion is hating?  Is that some ghetto argument that you learned from watching MTV?  So if someone says "NFL has too many rules against the defense".  You're response is "if it bothers you, don't watch"?

So if there's a white supremacist channel on TV or a pit bull fighting channel, you're response is "if it bothers you, don't watch it"?  Instead of discussing why the channel is wrong?

"If it bothers you, don't watch it" is not even addressing the issue and therefore not a valid argument.  Here are a few other examples:

My 12 year old:  Why is there porn on TV?
Me:  If it bothers you, don't watch it

My wife:  The dog is peeing on the carpet
Me:  If it bothers you, don't watch it     

My Doctor:  your CT scan is very alarming
Me:  If it bothers you, don't look at it
