Virginia Tech confuses the hell out of me. They were by far the worst team that Clemson played last year, yet apparently they were a good team in the other twelve games they played.

VT is living on years ago reputation. Their defense hasnt been the same stingy unit, the special teams have lapsed, and Logan Thomas just inst that good. Now they have lost a few good players on both sides in the draft and I dont know if they can fill them with quality.
GT will be healthy and the option is easier to defend with time to prepare, but game one is different from a bowl game. The speed of the game takes some time to get used to as well as ironing out the kinks with personel and reads. Also, there is no film of this years team, and while PJs option is pretty straight forward, you can bet so play action passing, reverses and flea flickers will be coming out of the wood work.
GT is worth a play at +7.5, and if you can get +250 or so on the ML that a good wager as well.

If VT stops the spread option, GT doesnt have a plan b!! VT WINS BY 10+, IF THEY CANT STOP IT, GT COVERS! I THINK THEY WILL SHUT IT DOWN AND KEEP THEM TO FIELD GOALS!!

In Johnson's 4 years at GT he is 1-3 vs VT with an average score of 23-27. But going into his 5 yr the roster is full of guys specifically recruited for his option offense and 3-4 defense. It's the deepest and most talented OL he's had at GT, with a Sr. at QB. The WR's are inexperienced, but I go to all of the scrimmages that he opens to the public and can tell you first hand they are BIG and athletic....Waller is 6'5 220 and Greene is 6'4 200. They've tinkered around some with the Pistol formation and Shotgun, so I expect to see a little more passing this year. The defense should be improved with the secondary being the strength. Johnson also hired a Special Teams coach for the 1st time in his career and I expect improvement there too....the guy is high energy and has all of the players itching to play ST.
VT lost 4 OL, their top RB, and WR but they do return most of their defense, so as always they should be solid on that side of the ball. Not to mention the game is at night in Blacksburg which is always a tough place to play.
The whole "they've had extra time to prepare" or "the option has been figured out" arguements are over-played. Common sense would tell you that extra time to prepare should be an advantage vs any offense, not just the option. And every offense has been figured out. I don't think DC's are sitting around scratching their head saying "How do I stop this I-formation....or Spread, etc" It doesn't matter what the DC knows, the trick is getting eleven 20 year olds to know what all of their assignments are....which is easier said than done...especially in today's world of selfish, Sportscenter highlight players trying to be a hero. Don't let the "experts" fool you, the option is hard to defend.
With all of that being said, I think it will be a low scoring game with GT pulling the upset....something like 20-17 or 23-20. I'm taking GT +7.5, with a little on the ML and the Under.

I liked the big QB Logan Thomas to run over gtech himself...if he is not playing, I have questions.
Big reservations on Gtech's defense....the second half ot the Utah bowl game was terrible..and they have a tendency to get ripped on the ground.
Vtech has the D to stop them cold in Blacksburgh.....have to get some clarity on the QB spot first.
