What teams and/or defenses do u like week 1 and why?

I don't do much usually until the preview mags come out...
*using Steele's staff of 10-15 to do the work for me.

By then I have established the TRUE identity of each team last year (legit or fraud?)...then simply factoring in the changes
*IMO...deciding how good/bad a team really was last year is the key part....(overlooked by most)

BUT....gun to the head (GTTH)....I would consider

$$$     ULM +23    OU with WV on deck...ULM QB +7/9 starters (same team that beat Ark...lost to Auburn in OT...and lost by 5 to a very good Baylor)
FAU +31    Miami 4 starters back from terrible D and Gators on deck....FAU much improved late LY
Ole Miss ML     Rebels the better team and should win here
TT -2       SMU only 5/5 starters and on decline...TT offense fine / D much better

$$      UAB +6    tough rivalry game....UAB much better under that Garrick McGee (sharp)....Troy tough at home but just 3/2 st (over maybe better)
TCU +5'  Frog D should match up well here...LSU lost too much on D
Clem -1   Georgia with SCaro on deck.....Clemson should simply outscore Ga....Clem D much better....Dawg D much worse
Purdue +14   Cinn takes a step back under that Tommy Toooberville?....that D Hazell likes dog role and should have Boilers ready here...

   $      UCLA -13.....Wazzu +14....Ohio +16.........

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BOOM.....info for 99% of other posters....but...you kinda have to refer to a team's BASE D though...even though they might be in something else most of the time...

eg.    The 3-4 most identifiable with Saban / Bama....but recently they use a 4-3 look even more....> (gotta call them a 3-4 team)
LSU no doubt a 4-3 team (Miami style attacking front 4)...but seem to prefer a 4-2-5 as of late.....

But yeah most of these are simply a nickel package (just adding a DB)....while TCU and others use a hybrid / rover type as the 5th DB
  *interesting that S. Carolina's 1st 2 SPURS are like 180 and 180 lbs.    ...................

Right

This is called doing the homework. Some people get it...and some don't.

Making bets right now in May is a little crazy if you ask me. Why? Too much can change. Why? It's called 18 to 23 year olds..... yeah.

A lot of teams are doing the hybrid LB / DB these days. Why? It's called the Spread offense. As the offense in college football evolved so did the defense. It had to.

Note this thoonly teams with a good front 4 can pull it off.. S.C could last year because of Clowny,Taylor and the pressure in the middle. If you have a good front 4 like LSU for example, it's almost like you are playing with a 5th man up front

Cannot argue with any of your reasoning Bookie - good job.

I like ULM +23 because in addition to ULM being a good Sun Belt squad, I think OU takes a step back and could be looking at a 7 win year.  I also think Vandy regresses a little while Ole Miss is clearly on a roll and has better overall talent - like Ole Miss a lot.

In general, I like betting in Weeks 1 and 2; while it's well documented that big chalk covers well early on because talented teams beat up cupcakes to preserve/enhance their rankings, I especially like to bet on teams that have a lot of returning starters including the QB (at least 13/14) against teams not returning a lot of starters especially when not returning their starting QB (10 or less). There are some exceptions such as if one is a team like Alabama where the depth is so great they are plugging in lost 5 star talent with slightly younger 5 star talent, and I don't have exact stats, but anecdotally it seems the teams with many returning starters/QB cover in this situation Week 1 much more than not, regardless of the number. I've not lost money betting this way weeks 1 and 2.

Hey Dugie...........

Here is my SEC East Predictions

South Carolina              10 - 2  BC     7 - 5 WC
Georgia                         10 - 2 BC     8 - 4 WC
Florida                           9 - 3  BC      7 - 5 WC
Missouri                         8 - 4 BC       6 - 6 WC
Tennessee                     7 - 5 BC        5 - 7 WC
Vanderbilt                       6 - 6  BC       4 - 8 WC
Kentucky                        5 - 7 BC        3 - 9 WC

A few thoughts on this side of the conference. South Carolina is the best IMO. Georgia is a very close 2nd. Winner of that game wins the East, simple as that. Florida is a garbage can as usual. This is the most over hyped team year in and year out. EVERY year this team is garbage. When Urban was there, they were very good. Since..... Straight garbage. Come on in Florida homers. Please tell me how good you are then after you get done telling me tell Louisville the same thing. I called that game SU. As a 14 point Dog I called for a straight up Louisville win. Why? Garbage can university AKA, Florida got showed up for who they really were.

Vanderbilt takes a step back, sorry Vandy fans, the " 9 " win seasons only come......well, once in a lifetime. Back to the bottom of nobody gives-a-garbage. Tennessee will get better, hang in there Vols fans. Butch is a good hire. Missouri might actually be the most improved team in the East this year. Looking for a SEC East sleeper? Look here. Kentucky who?

Dugie I will do a Tennessee write up for you later

SEC West predictions to come along with all the other " MAJOR " conferences.

SEC West

Alabama                     12 - 0 BC            11 - 1 WC
Texas A&M                 11 - 1 BC             8 - 4 WC
LSU                            9 - 3 BC              7 - 5 WC
Ole Miss                     8 - 4 BC              6 - 6 WC
Arkansas                    8 - 4 BC               6 - 6 WC
Miss st                       8 - 4 BC               6 - 6 WC
Auburn                        7 - 5 BC               5 - 7 WC

A few thoughts on this side...

Alabama is the best still and until proven otherwise they are the champs. I do think they wont be as good as last years team defensively but they will be better offensively. Johnny Football and A&M is very interesting. I know that most think he will come right back and do the same things, not so fast. He is great dont get me wrong. But the funny thing is that if this kid played in the Big 12 last year then he wouldn't have gotten the respect he deserved. Why? Hello SEC nation and the brain-washers EsecPN. Whether you want to believe that or not is your decision...but it is fact. Dont be fooled by LSU losing all those defensive guys to the draft. 9 I think it was, you know, the great defense that Clemson drug up and down the field. Yeah. 32 first downs to 9. Doubling them in every statistical category possible. Yeah. LSU will be fine, they have great players and will play with a chip on their shoulders. I'm not ready to believe in the Ole Miss revolution just yet. Yeah they did improve and I like their knew coach. But overall, they are still along way away. Don't believe me? You will, most always come around to in the end. Arkansas is a team every one thinks is gonna straight tank. Again, nonsense if you believe the garbage being thrown everywhere. Will they be great? No. They will be better then most think tho. Miss st is about the same every year since they reached what I believe is their " peak ". Go look at their schedule every year and you will see that they beat alot of bad teams and never win any good games. Auburn is still rebuilding and will continue this season. I like Gus and think he leaps and bounds better then Gene ever was. Any of you that knows me knows that I called Gene out for several years on here as a bad football coach, still think im wrong? Don't see any teams beating down his door for a job.

Boom great stuff in this thread...

  • I agree that the SEC East will be decided in week 2 when Georgia and South Carolina match up.
  • I don't like Florida this year either but I still see a team that will head to November with a chance to win the East. They could possibly work some things out by then.
  • I think Bama's defense will be better this year. They still need to find a couple of CB's but safety and LB is going to be very good. I could see this team being better at getting after the passer this year as well. Denzell Duvall is a guy that I really like and reminds me of Hightower from a couple of years ago. CJ Mosley is a stud! If they get solid play from the DT/NT position then they will be able to create the matchups they want defensively. I actually see 3-4 true freshman that may contribute to the defense this year and become important players in the defense by year's end.
  • LSU is due for a down year IMO. They will lose at least 4 games.
  • Arkansas is a wild card and Auburn will likely improve but that doesn't guarantee a bowl game yet.
  • Clemson's biggest games are the first and last games of the year. If they take down Georgia (and they should) then they have a great set up for huge season. The South Carolina game will be tough but I could see both of those team in NC contention when they meet in the season finale.
  • I love Stanford but I am in complete agreement that finding targets in the passing game is a huge question mark. I really like Hogan and think his legs will be important for this team.

Here we go.... no more distractions from clowns.

Quick review

Champion - Alabama

There is this team.......................then everyone else. I love how other teams from this conference love to " Carry Pride " off of Alabama's accomplishments.. LMAO. Guess what boys, When Alabama has a parade for their NC... they dont mention you. Sorry.

ACC

Atlantic

Clemson                         12 - 0 BC                    9 - 3 WC
Florida st                         11 - 1 BC                   9 - 3 WC
Maryland                         9 - 3 BC                     6 - 6 WC
Boston College                7 - 5 BC                    5 - 7 WC
Wake Forest                   7 - 5 BC                     5 - 7 WC
NCST                              7 - 5 BC                     4 - 8 WC
Syracuse                        6 - 6 BC                     3 - 9 WC

This side IMO comes down to one game as it does in the SEC east every year here lately. Clemson / FSU. Last year I predicted that FSU would beat Clemson and they did. Mostly IMO because of the home field advantage. This year is no different. Clemson is more talented IMO on offense then they were last year and that could be scary. Boyd is a great QB who will be a Heisman finalist. But the thing about Clemson this season is defense. This team will be solid defensively and like I tell you guys all the time it's about depth, and Clemson defensively has developed depth on the DL and on all 3 phases of the defense. So in short, I think this is a really good team that is a legit national threat.

FSU has a guy named Jamies Winston and if you dont know him, get ready. This guy is big athletic and has a big time NFL arm. IF he gets some early season confidence, this could be something to watch. If anyone is looking for a  " surprise " this year, look for Maryland. This is pretty good football team. C.J Brown comes back from not playing last season with a torn ACL. The best skill guy in the country that not many know about is Stephon Diggs. This cat is crazy explosive and can make people miss in a phone booth. I really like Maryland and if there is a major upset in the ACC this season I could see Clemson slipping there. BC, Wake and NCST could all be the same team IMO. Throw them into a bucket and your gonna get the same results almost every time. The only team that is clear to me is Syracuse. I think this team will struggle with the transition. They will be better for it, but overall a struggle.

Coastal later...........

absolutely. I think since it's a early season game....Syracuse really at a point where there whole season is " ahead of them " .... Clemson doesn't play in a dome, yeah. Lots of reasons...

But dont forget this. Syracuse has not seen speed like there gonna see from Clemson. This team isnt like anything they have seen before.

boom never said Cuse would win just saying could be a trap game. Clemson should win and most likely will by DD

Hate to be an a$$ boom but enjoy clemson football this year because i saw Clemson's opponents in ACC hoops not looking good. ACC hoops will be awesome.

Just my 2 cents though will worry about hoops when its hoops time

Boom

Good stuff Boom..I dont think Florida  really cared about Sugar Bowl much like when Bama got routed vs Utah.I just dont know how u call a  team that beats a good LSU,FSU & embarrasses Spurrier's Gamecocks plus defeating the #5 TeaxasA&M on the road garbage.I dont care if Muschamp losse his defense 2 deep it will be good and Qb is only getting better, but great analysis of SEC-ACC.Great assessment of MissSt..peaked...Is Dabo ever gonna beat Spurrier again..I mean ever?

Don't take this the wrong way.... but this is the idiocy im talking about when it comes to the college football fans. When any team from that League gets beat.... there is always a reason to why they did....

If they would have beat Louisville it would have been because they are the mighty SEC.... if they lost, it's because they don't care. Cant have it both ways

Every time they get smacked it's a excuse.

All I heard was how LSU would destroy Clemson....People told me that Clemson hasn't ever seen a team like this... Blah, Blah, Blah... But when Clemson drug them up and down the field it was....oh, well LSU didn't care about that game.

WTF

Would a SEC fan step up to the plate and agree with me on this cause they know good and dang well Im right

Coastal

Miami                       10 - 2 BC           7 - 5 WC
G.T                           10 - 2 BC          7 - 5 WC
N.C                           10 - 2 BC          7 - 5 WC
V.T                            10 - 2 BC          7 - 5 WC
Pittsburgh                  8 - 4 BC            6 - 6 WC
Virginia                      7 - 5 BC            4 - 8 WC
Duke                          7 - 5 BC            3 - 9 WC

The Coastal is a crap shoot every year and nothing changes this year IMO. I like Miami to win it, but they could finish as bad as 4th. Who knows with this side. Miami is real contender IMO, I think so. I think they kick the year off by beating a vastly overrated Florida team in week 2 and Morris has the potential to be a dark horse for the Heisman. Duke Johnson is the real deal people and if you didn't see him much last year, put it on your College football bucket list this season. Wow and explosive. G.T is about the same year and year out. Start strong and limp to the finish. I think Paul Johnson is a wonderful coach but if he doesn't start to recruit better he will be out the door. It's clear the guy is trending down in recruiting. V.T IMO, is Florida's twin brother, overrated year in and year out and there gonna get the doors blown off them by Bama. I'm not sure the will survive physically after the Bama game. Logan Thomas might be the most overrated QB in the last ten years of college football. Top Ten Draft pick? IMO, he would be 3rd on the depth chart at most places. The defense will be pretty good and keep them in games, but the offense better start to figure it out or could be another long season. Pitt is gonna have a tough time adjusting IMO as they kickoff the season with FSU, good thing is it's at home on Labor Day so they will have some momentum plus FSU is breaking in a new QB, so alot of positives for them in that game. I think this game will actually be much closer then most think. I like Mike London but his guy might be looking for another job pretty soon. Hey, here is a hint London.... Don't schedule Oregon. There gonna beat you like rented mule. And well of course, Duke is Duke.

Next the Big Ten??

ACC
