What Natural and some others haven't touched upon, is the strategy Spurrier took into the Auburn game, and what it says about Auburn...... Spurrier went for it on every 4th down situation except 1! Had he not done that, Auburn would have won in a rout! Spurrier came into the game acknowledging that his team couldn't beat Auburn playing 3-down football... it was a gutsy move, and it's the reason Spurrier is one of the greatest coaches ever... but it is also a testament to the respect he has for Auburn's offense!
SC was only 6 of 14 on 3rd downs in the game, compared to Auburn, who was 6 of 8... Auburn didn't attempt any 4th downs, and didn't need to... SC was 5 of 6 on 4th downs... this kept SC in the game until late, but if they had failed on 1 more of those 4th downs, Auburn would have pulled away and won by 14 or more... The final score of that game is misleading, because it doesn't reflect the disparity between the offensive efficiency on both sides of the ball...
Auburn's 3rd down efficiency on offense is an eye-gauging 55.8%... 2nd best in the country!
What people don't know, is that their 3rd down efficiency on defense is an impressive 34.3%... which is in the top 25 for that category!
"Don't call me OLD Miss" is 30.3% on defense (top 15), but on offense they are only 42.2%, which puts them in the middle of the pack for all teams in that category. If Ol Miss struggles to convert 3rd downs in this game, they will have a problem, because Auburn will get theirs...
As for the guy talking about me not coming back to this thread... let's remember the Duke - Miami thread you started, in which I told you not to bet on Duke! I'm still waiting for my "thank you" on that advice...
GL Natural! Thanks again for the great write-up!
