1-0 yesterday...winner on first 2 unit play of year.
Elon -2.5 (1 UNIT) - Maybe this isn't the time of the year to lay money down on conference games but I really like this Elon team. They have very good size in their frontline and have shown tremendous improvement over last year on the defensive end. Their length has allowed them to turn their opponent over more and their interior defense is much improved as well. Their rebounding has been very solid as well. They don't score well on the inside and rely quite a bit on the 3PT. They get 33.6% of their points from behind the arc which ranks them 52nd in the NCAA. That is usually enough to scare me off a road team but GA Southern relies on knocking down outside shots as well but don't shoot it as well as Elon.
The one thing that GA Southern has done pretty well early on is force turnovers on the defensive end but Elon is 5th in turnover %. I don't see a lot of second chance opportunities for GA Southern and if they can't generate points off turnovers where do they score from? Elon has put a lot of emphasis on deflections and turning their opponent over and I see that happening tonight against a team that ranks 216th in turnover % offense.
Elon has won 3 of 4 against GA Southern including knocking them out of the Southern Conference tournament last year. They have a solid win over South Carolina as well. They are coming off a loss to VMI but VMI is a team who takes care of the ball much better than GA Southern.
I am pretty high on Elon this year and really like their size especially for a Southern Conference team. Troutman is a really good player and Koch is a guy with good size who can knock down the outside shot. Elon has their first home conference game on Saturday against the College of Charleston but with this being the conference opener and the fact they lost their last game I think we get a great effort.
