Furman -3.5: Seems I've been picking teams with nicknames I have no clue what they mean, so I can tell you a paladin is ... 'a knight renowned for heroism and chivalry'. Now onto the game, the Southern Conf opener Mercer at Furman at noon ET. Furman had a surprisingly uneven start to the season but Bob Richey's squad has found their groove with 8 wins in their last 9 outings, falling by 7 to a real good Illy St team at a neutral. Richey, in his 9th season in charge, always runs a real good program with a winning percentage near .700 in his tenure. I like their mix this season with some good returnees, G Asa Johnson came over from Clemson and this freshman G Alex Wilkins has been impressive with a team-leading 16.8 PPG. Furman was projected to battle Chattanooga for the league title with each team nabbing 5 of 10 first-place votes in the preseason poll. Chatt, however, has been really underwhelming and it actually looks like ETSU will be Furman's main rival. Mercer, projected to finish 8th out of the 10 teams, has been surprisingly good while playing a tough non-conf schedule. They didn't beat Tennessee, UCF or Clemson, but they did not get rolled either. Still, in a conference matchup on the road against a real quality, well-coached opponent, I don't see the Bears going into Greenville and getting it done. Look for Furman to pull away to an 8-10 point victory to open what they hope will be a march to the Southern regular season title. 0.75 units.
