The Oklahoma Sooners are one win away from capturing the 2026 College World Series.

However, my North Carolina vs. Oklahoma predictions aren’t jumping to any conclusions or crowning any champions prematurely.

See why my free betting picks for Sunday, June 21 are expecting a Tar Heels bounce-back.

North Carolina vs Oklahoma prediction

My North Carolina vs Oklahoma best bet: North Carolina moneyline (-154 at DraftKings)

In a series that looked poised to go the full three games ever since the matchup was decided, I’m backing the North Carolina Tar Heels to even things up in Game 2 and force a winner-take-all on Monday.

For a team that’s relied on effective pitching and sound fielding en route to 53 wins, it was odd to see both fail Scott Forbes’ ball club in Saturday’s opener.

Ryan Lynch and an elite bullpen behind him give the Tar Heels a favorable pitching forecast, while the defense’s .983 fielding percentage ranks fourth nationally.

Lynch has a career 3.76 ERA across 155 2/3 innings, striking out just over a batter per frame. Possessing a robust 3.60 SIERA across such a large sample size is a good indicator of success in the biggest game of his young career.

It’s likely that Oklahoma counters with Xander Mercurius, although Skip Johnson remains cagey with his plans. Mercurius posted a 5.51 ERA and 6.85 FIP across 19 appearances, only four of which were starts.

His lack of starting experience is the biggest factor in this handicap, and it raises a host of concerns.

How does his arm respond to a season-high 7 1/3 innings and 104 pitches last week? What sort of leash is he trusted with? Will his newfound success in the rotation last as teams start getting a better read on his approach?

Mercurius has relied on the punchout (29 Ks in his last four starts), but will that approach work against a UNC lineup that rarely swings and misses, and has the best BB-K% of any team that made it to Omaha?

The recipe is there for the Tar Heels to get back into the win column. Oklahoma is scorching-hot, but North Carolina holds the advantage on the mound, in the field, and at the plate.
