My analysis
You wouldn’t have believed it around Christmas time but Crystal Palace have been one of the Premier League's form teams in the final month of the season. Since Oliver Glasner arrived at Selhurst Park they’ve improved hugely, and with the return of Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise from injury they’ve showcased a real attacking threat. They’ve won five of their past six Premier League games and will want to end the season well in front of their home crowd.
Standing in their way is an Aston Villa side who have excelled all expectations this season and finished fourth, sealing a spot in next season’s Champions League. It’s a sensational achievement for the club and it’s one they really deserve, having played brilliantly all year and with Unai Emery showcasing why he’s one of the best coaches on the planet.
On the face of it, it’s hard to back against Villa knowing how good they’ve been this season but we need to consider how they’ve spent the last few days. At their end-of-season awards on Tuesday, they watched the Tottenham vs Man City game, in which City’s win secured them the fourth spot. With that spot secured and a lot of celebrating having happened, it’s easy to see why they might not be at their freshest on Sunday.
No amount of complacency or hangover is likely to cause Emery to go into that game unmotivated but they are likely to be more sloppy than usual. While Palace will want to sign off for the season with a home win this is a game that could end as a score draw, with both teams enjoying playing and looking to finish the season without injuries ahead of Euro 2024.
