Miami 41, Arkansas State 20: Freshman quarterback Brad Kaaya threw for 342 yards and four touchdowns, including a pair of 63-yard scoring strikes to Phillip Dorsett, as the Hurricanes walloped the visiting Red Wolves.

Kaaya, who was 29-of-51 for 356 yards and three TDs entering the game, completed 16-of-24 and threw only one garbage-time interception for Miami (2-1), which has won 10 of its last 11 home games. Dorsett finished with 201 yards on four receptions, while Duke Johnson ran for 90 yards and a touchdown.

Quarterback Fredi Knighten was 22-of-40 for 217 yards, rushed for a touchdown and also caught a 19-yard TD pass from wide receiver Tres Houston for the Red Wolves (1-2), who were undone by two turnovers and two missed field goals. Johnston White led Arkansas State with a career-high 83 rushing yards and a touchdown as he stepped in for injured starter Michael Gordon, who was unable to play after suffering a rib injury last week against Tennessee.

With Arkansas State trailing 27-14 in the third quarter, Knighten lost his grip attempting to pass at the Miami 40 and the Hurricanes recovered, setting up Dorsett’s second 63-yard catch-and-sprint scoring reception following a missed tackle three plays later. Miami marched 65 yards on nine plays on its next possession and went ahead 41-14 on Kaaya’s 6-yard toss to Braxton Berrios before the Red Wolves tacked on a fourth-quarter score.

Miami started fast and furious as Kaaya threw a touchdown pass to Dorsett on its second play of the game and reached the end zone on each of its first three possessions. Arkansas State, meanwhile, penetrated Miami territory on five of its seven first-half possessions but two missed field goals and an interception on a fake punt kept the Hurricanes’ 27-14 halftime cushion larger than it could have been.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Dorsett’s 201-yard receiving effort was the third 200-yard receiving game in program history as he joined Eddie Brown (220 yards, 1984) and Wesley Carroll (208, 1990). … Arkansas State, which has won or shared the last three Sun Belt Conference titles, fell to 0-8 against the ACC, including 0-2 against Miami. … The Hurricanes played without WR Stacy Coley (shoulder injury) and DE Al-Quadin Muhammad, who has been suspended the rest of the season for his altercation with another student last spring.
