Ryan Mallett returned to form with 311 passing yards and three touchdowns as No. 13 Arkansas topped Texas A&M 24-17 in the second annual “Southwest Classic” between the former Southwestern Conference rivals.

Cobi Hamilton caught five passes for 98 yards and Knile Davis rushed for 82 yards for the Razorbacks, who bounced back after a tough loss to No. 1 Alabama two weeks ago.

Arkansas jumped on top at the start, marching 85 yards in eight plays. Mallett went 4 of 4 on the series, capping it with a nine-yard scoring pass to Joe Adams.

Texas A&M took advantage of Mallett’s lone mistake later in the first quarter when Terrence Fredrick intercepted him and returned it 34 yards to the Arkansas 2-yard line. It took four plays from there, but Christine Michael finally punched it in from the 1-yard line to tie it 7-7.

But Mallett made up for the mistake when he hit Hamilton with a 71-yard pass down the middle three plays later.

The schools traded touchdowns late in the second quarter. Mallett hit Ben Cleveland with a six-yard pass with 58 seconds remaining and Jerrod Johnson answered 44 seconds later with a 31-yard strike to Jeff Fuller. It was 21-14 Arkansas at the half.

The Aggies pulled to within 21-17 early in the fourth, but the Razorbacks got their own field goal less than three minutes later and shut out the Aggies the rest of the way.
