ATHENS, Ga. -- Losing your starting quarterback in the first quarter of the opening game would ordinarily be a devastating blow.
Fortunately for No. 15 Georgia, freshman Jake Fromm proved otherwise, as the touted newcomer came in to spark the Bulldogs to a 31-10 victory over Appalachian State on Saturday.
Fromm, who was forced into action when starter Jacob Eason injured his left knee after a late hit out of bounds with six minutes remaining in the first quarter, completed 10 of 15 passes for 143 yards and a touchdown for Georgia (1-0), which moved to 2-0 all-time against the Mountaineers (0-1).
He had plenty of help.
Georgia also rushed for 221 yards, with seniors Nick Chubb and Sony Michel nearly reaching 100. Chubb rushed 15 times for 96 yards and two scores, with Michel putting up 87 yards on 16 carries, with all the yardage coming in the first three quarters.
Defensively, the Bulldogs allowed only 284 yards, with Appalachian State's only touchdown scoring on a 20-yard scramble by Taylor Lamb against Georgia's second unit with 5:41 left.
A 43-yard field goal by Michael Rubino with 26 seconds remaining capped the scoring.
Fromm's entrance sparked Georgia, which went three-and-out on its first two possessions against the Mountaineers, the preseason pick to win the Sun Belt Conference.
The former five-star performer led the Bulldogs to touchdown drives on his first three possessions, with a 25-yard pass to wide receiver Javon Wims setting up the first score, a 1-yard run from running back Nick Chubb.
Fromm connected with Wims on a 34-yard touchdown pass to push Georgia's lead to 14-0 early in the second quarter.
The Bulldogs and Fromm weren't done, as the freshman drove Georgia 57 yards on four plays, capped by a 6-yard run by Sony Michel for a 21-0 halftime lead.
Fromm finished the first half 8 of 12 for 109 yards and the one touchdown.
NOTES: As expected, Georgia was without starting CB Malkom Parrish, who suffered a broken bone in his foot more than two weeks ago. ... Senior Dyshon Sims was a surprise starter for the Bulldogs at right guard after redshirt freshman Solomon Kindley practiced there during fall camp. ... The 2017 season is the 10-year anniversary of Appalachian State's 34-32 victory at Michigan, but the Mountaineers are 0-9 versus Power 5 conferences since.
