When your long-time manager is preparing to lead your team out for the final time, you hope for words of inspiration. After all, you’re looking to send him off with a victory and leave everyone with positive memories.
That’s why many West Ham fans had to be concerned with the comments made by David Moyes leading up to their finale with Manchester City. “It’d be difficult stopping their Under-14’s,” he said of Manchester City in the leadup this week.
Not that he’s wrong, mind you. But it speaks to the confidence of a manager who has seemingly checked out, and who has seen his team utterly capitulate over the past few months when facing teams featuring high-quality attacks.
In a match where the betting markets feature more juice than a brunch with unlimited mimosas, every angle matters.
West Ham’s last two away matches have been ugly viewing for the Hammers. A 5-0 defeat at Chelsea was preceded by a 5-2 loss at Crystal Palace, just two of four instances where they’ve conceded at 5+ goals away from home in the Premier League. That’s out of 17 matches, a stunning ratio, and it doesn’t include a 5-1 defeat at Liverpool in the Carabao Cup.
And in three of those four defeats, they trailed by multiple goals at halftime. Chelsea scored three times in the opening 36 minutes, with Palace putting four into the back of the net in the opening half. Their defeat at Fulham in December also saw them concede a trio prior to the break.
With the betting odds so heavily tilted in City’s favor, why are we able to get a price of -102 for this play? It’s because Manchester City have scored multiple goals before halftime in only eight of their 17 home Premier League matches, and only two of their last eight.
Regardless of that fact, Manchester City know they can’t mess around here. A draw or defeat gives the title to Arsenal, and the longer they allow West Ham to hang around, the more likely they are to be motivated to shock the world.
I’m expecting Pep to lay siege to their penalty area from the opening whistle. If they can put West Ham to the sword inside the first half-hour, they can put the West Ham players into beach mode before halftime and cruise to the title.
Manchester City has a chance to become the first English top-flight side to win four consecutive league titles, and they won’t want to waste time doing so. Destiny is in their hands, and they’ll grasp it as they net multiple goals before halftime.
