#1 Posted: 1/22/2012 3:58:16 PM I grew up idiolizing Joe Pa and Penn St as my dad played there when Joe was an asst coach. I played tennis at Utah State and after a match with BYU, I took off all my sweaty clothes and put on a PSU football shirt before we went to a Provo restaurant to eat. The manager of the restaurant saw my shirt and came over to tell me that the whole restaurant was Joe Paterno and PSU fans. He told me the story of Joe and Lavell Edwards eating dinner at that restaurant the night before they played each other back in 1992. A game I fondly remembering attending with my pops. Their bill came to thirty something dollars and both coaches reached for the check. Lavell said he wanted to pick it up and leave a generous tip becauce he knew the girl and knew she was saving to go on a mormon mission. The manager of the restaurant told me that Joe grabbed the check and left a thousand dollar tip on the thirty dollar meal. Not surprsing after the millions he donated to the University.
A great tradedy occured at Penn State caused by Jerry Sandusky, and I wish that Joe would have done more, but at this time I want to remember Joe Pa for the countless contributions he made on the field and the bigger ones he made off the field. RIP JOEPA |

clepto can be an fool, but we all fall into that category at times. He's right though. Paterno knew of such horrific events and passed on the decision to be a man and do the right thing. Great football coach, not so much a great man....

He did the right thing..just a day later. He admitted he'd made a mistake. The facts are the Police and the first victims mother sat in on a tapped phone call where Sandusky was confessing. Neither pressed on with charges or anything else. That was 4-5 years before the shower incident. Stop all the stupid talk about JP not being a man. He was 10 times the man that you will ever be. |

#12 Posted: 1/22/2012 8:45:17 PM Paterno went to the campus police. He told his bosses what he knew. Assignment football: cover your assignment. Do your job. Paterno did. Others failed to do theirs. Condemning Paterno to eternal damnation in a public internet forum, as some have done on this site today, is pathetic and stupid. |

#13 Posted: 1/23/2012 10:54:38 AM Take a minute and reflect on your life..There are things we all are not proud of. Joe Pa was a GREAT human being, altered the life of countless teenagers, volunteered his time/gave to charities, and will always be remembered as a legend in college football.
If you want to bash this man, make sure you have nothing in your life you have done which you might be ashamed of first!
RIP JOE PA |

#14 Posted: 1/23/2012 12:08:10 PM Unfortunately Joe's massive contributions to the university and the kids can't be evaluated in a vacuum. Nor should his contributions go unnoticed because of how he handled the Sandusky fiasco. The two will forever be linked.

WRONG. There are things I've done in my life that I'm ashamed about. I'm willing to take responsibility for those things. Why should JoePa be any different? |

#15 Posted: 1/23/2012 1:16:48 PM Hutch he came out and admitted he should have handled it better..Hindsight is always 20/20 and this case is no different. I feel the brunt of the blame for this entire under the rug story fell on his shoulders when there is an entire community that should share fault. I agree that he is/was the face of Penn State and will utimately be held accountable, but some people want to put him in the shower with Sandusky and the boy...
Unfortunately as a Penn State alum I have to agree with your first paragraph |

#17 Posted: 1/23/2012 3:58:01 PM who comes into these threads and bashes the man during his passing?
trash of the universe. dont know much about joe but from what basically anyone who knew him (countless huge sports figures, family, and players) would say, he would have helped you trash become better men.
Less i remind you all the prosecution just lost a key witness as well. The prosecution!
Great story by the way. Sounds like his trademark.

During his passing? He has already passed. No one can take away what he did for the University and the many kids who played for him. But stop running from the truth. Wouldn't JoePa be the one person who would insist in being honest with himself? |

And that is a joke. He made a bad choice and he regretted it. Still can't be held accountable for Sandusky's "alleged" actions. |

RIP JOE PA A great man does not enable a serial pedophile to continue to rape little boys. A great man puts an immediate stop to child rape. Paterno knew about Sandusky since 1988 & turned a blind eye-thus allow Sandusky to continue to harm Children. darn Joe Paterno. |

#22 Posted: 1/23/2012 5:43:36 PM It's interesting to note that the Paterno haters here frequently use phrases like "darn Joe," "shower Joe with ....", or want to "stick something up his behind."
I have no idea what this phenomenon means but would conecture that they have impressionable minds, and their angry outbursts in a public forum may be connected to their own suppressed sordid urges.
Good luck with that. |

1988?
