We agree, the term living wage is very subjective and one size does not fit all..it varies by each individual's standard of living...and the necessities they feel are needed to obtain that level of comfort.
I could not agree more. Please repeat this on all threads where the left leaning members here cry for the heads of all CEOs for making so much. They are in high value jobs that not everyone can do and are compensated as such.

Sometimes it is responsibility. Lots of times it is demand. Not a lot of demand for longshoreman. Plenty available. No more stressful than lots of other jobs---they aren't getting paid for stress either. They are simply getting paid for monopoly in this case.

No. The employee can choose to leave at any time. You are the one that mentioned median and average. Then implied that was what you considered a livable wage. I say you are wrong. For example, I do not have a TV. So, to me people do not NEED this to get by. Again, live within your current means. Improve your means if you need to.
So, again, this is not winnable. But to me you are thinking a livable wage is way more than I do. At no point will I agree that it should include saving for retirement, vacations, kid's college, or anything else I consider above livable.
For centuries, we got by without all of these 'necessary' perks we have now.
Nobody is owed more than they are worth really. We all think we are worth more than we are. Sure we all want more and wish for others to have more---it simply doesn't work that way.
To me you include far too much in your idea of 'livable' wage. But to each his own on that.

The living wage is the amount of income needed to provide an decent quality of life. It should pay for cost of living in any location, and should be adjusted to compensate for inflation. The purpose of a living wage is to make sure than anyone who works full-time should have enough money to live above the poverty level and avoid homelessness.
A living wage does not include some basic buffers needed to improve one's quality of life or protect aqainst emergencies. For example, it doesn't provide enough income for ever eating at restaurants, save for a rainy day or pay for education loans. It doesn't include insurance, including medical, or auto or renters/homeowners. In other words, it's enough to keep you out of a homeless shelter, but you'd still have to live paycheck-to-paycheck. If you can't afford insurance, and you get sick, you could still wind up homeless.

I am not nitpicking---quit eluding the issue that you brought up. Look at all the things you tried to include in a livable wage---TV was my small example---use any of your larger ones you like. For example, at no point should a kid's college be considered part of a living wage---or saving for retirement---or vacations. There was a time when it was understood this was for the richer folks. Not everyone. If you want to do/have these things---do better is all. If you want to get by on a livable wage---it can be done. You just will not live an exorbitant lifestyle.

Show me where any experts says all of those things are necessities in life? No legitimate source will list those as 'basics'. Come on, man---you know better than this! Sure, if you cannot afford a TV--and get one---at that point it is above your means.
If you need transportation (some really don't) it doesn't have to be a great car---until you truly can afford one. Same with vacations, etc. etc.
This really is not rocket science.
My point is you are assuming livable should be closer to median: I contend it should not be. If you want to live better---then do better.
My point earlier is that it is subjective with the happiness as well. Some folks are much happier with much less.
It is still each person's opinion where they would feel comfortable; it is not their opinion on the necessities in life---these are basically self-defined.

People work at Wal-mart or places like that all over the country and get by. There are people working restaurants, motels, etc. All of these people are getting by. Not living high on the hog; getting by. If they do not want to do better---that is a they problem.
