We've had this discussion before Wall.
Follow the path of that individual making minimum wage and you will see why they are making minimum wage.
What an asinine statement.
Wow, just wow.
I'm taking my Ambien now and unplugging my keyboard.
Nicely put Wall. We have a huge segment of society that will never get out of poverty or even be able to retire on their terms. I really think we have passed the tipping point and this will never get better. It is a very complicated issue and many on here have pointed to the wealthy/corporate greed as a cause, but our government is as well.
Unchecked illegal immigration has kept wages down. Why should a business pay even minimum wage and benefits when they can hire illegals for cash and not pay benefits? Our govt has turned a blind eye to this issue as a wink wink to the business community and for votes (yes illegals vote in this country). Talk about slave labor! The devaluation of our dollar is not helping the poor either. The rich will always make money and have the means to do so in almost any economy, while the poor/lower middle class cannot. These elected officials have no problem voting to print more money to increase our debt, keep their power and further hurt the purchasing power of the people. Why do they care? They have a pension for life after serving 1 term. The easiest way to become a millionaire in this country is to get elected to Congress.
I was raised in a lower middle class household in a modest home. We had no AC, which was fun in Illinois in the summer. My parents barely got by but while we never had luxuries by any means or even the ability to go out to eat, I didn't feel I went without much as a kid. I was lucky and while I am now making more than my father ever dreamed about I fear for the future for my daughter (22). I fear there is not much a future left in this country for the next generation or two. What have we left them? A country sharply divided between rich/poor, black/white (still), left/right. I don't have the answers to fix this, it's just sad to see what has been done to this once great country by those in power and by those WE elected.

I am not advocating the minimum wage to be raised to $20-$30/hr because obviously, it's called "minimum wages" for a reason. having said that, I am more baffled by how some still carry that 'pure free-market" ideology which never exist in the first place. It just depends on which side the balance is tilt to and for a awhile now, it's been towards the rich. Yet, some of us pretend it never happened.
We can sit here and talk about the "American Dream" and the past all we want but in reality, it's just not the same anymore. People talk about how college is now more accessible for the poor but a degree doesn't nearly get you as far as it used to be except a huge debt waiting for you at the end. Barriers are set up much higher on all entry levels so in essence, the poor are EVEN in a more disadvantage stage compared with before.

And It get worse as bad as that sounds. This country is saddled with $17T in debt . Anybody following the baby boomers in retirement will find themselves with less $ in Social Security checks, and a higher retirement age.
No (Democratic) politician is willing to have this honest discussion w/ the American people, for fear of alienating their base.

The reason local pharmacies cant compete is because the FDA has put them out of business with ridiculous regulation that only the big corporate pharmacies can comply with.
80K is pretty good for a non-skilled worker.
I have a hard time having any sympathy for a burger flipper that isn't making 80K.
I think you are being completely unreasonable, and unrealistic if you think that minimum wage should give a person the spending power of 80K.,

I don't know if anyone is expecting the working poor not to get assistance.
The rule of thumb is 40% unemployment = riots and revolution. Greece was right around that area when they started their austerity riots etc. They have settled down now to about 25% unemployment.
I understand the working man's plight, I had to take a low paying job a couple of years ago just to get bye. I didn't blame anyone, I just kept looking for a new job. Went back to school.
At 7-10% unemployment, there is competition for good jobs, not everyone is going to make it. That is a fact of life, the welfare and entitlement programs are there to help those that do not make it.

And when the politicians know they will be enacting legislation that helps or hurt a company or industry they jump on that in the market. If you or I bought/sold stock or options like that we'd go to jail, but these people get rich off of it.
