Defenseman Paul Martin was told by the coaching staff to sit out this afternoon's practice at Prudential Center after playing only four shifts in the third period of Thursday's win in Boston. Devils coach Brent Sutter said that Martin has just "a couple of nagging things that we just wanted to make sure we handled quickly."
Martin said he would have been able to practice today if allowed and worked out off the ice instead. He missed three games last month with a left leg/hip injury, but said his current ailment is unrelated. "It's not the same injury from before," Martin said.
When asked if he would play in Saturday afternoon's game against Phoenix, Martin replied. "I imagine so. They didn't say I wouldn't be playing." Sutter said Martin would be "a game-day decision."
Sutter said he would stick with the same line combinations he used in the last two periods Thursday to start Saturday's game, but left open the possibility of switching them back during the game.
Martin Brodeur will start in net against the Coyotes and Sutter said he would go with seven defensemen again, but didn't indicate if Sheldon Brookbank would get back in the lineup after sitting out in Boston.
The forward lines and defense pairs from today's practice.
Forwards: Elias-Zajac-Gionta; Parise-Madden-Langenbrunner; Zubrus-Brylin-Clarkson; Rupp-Pelley-Asham.
Defense: White-Mottau; Greene-Rachunek; Vishnevski-Brookbank; Oduya.
