Do you tools even follow football? A qb making his first ever start is all of a sudden better than the guy who led the team to OT in the NFC championship game and has been playing relatively mistake free football the last two years...

And don't forget, Kolb was the greatest thing going, maybe guys should go back and read those post about how great he would be off his one-game-wonder.
And Cassel also was the greatest thing going as well, both of those QB'S ended up doing basically nothing.

Wow didn't think this thread would generate such a controversy!
My main point was this...up until yesterday he had a grand total of ZERO starts under his belt yet everybody was ready to annoint the kid like he has actually proven something in this league.
I'll give the kid credit he played a great game against a team that wasn't ready to play. As much as people want to hate on Smith he obviously doesn't have the same upside as Kap but he manages his team well and rarely makes mistakes.
Once D co-ordinators have a few weeks of film to help them prepare for the kid then we will truly see how he does. One game does not make or break a QB. That being said, its tough not to give him another shot this week to see what he can do.

Who said anything about betting against this team based on the QB? I for the most part have always backed the Niners (incl. last year against the Saints). The whole point of the thread was annointing the kid when he had a grand total of zero starts. This had nothing to do with throwing money against the Niners just b/c they are starting a rookie.
As for the Bears game yes he played very well I will give him credit, but it was clear that the entire team laid an egg last night and didn't show up on both sides of the ball. Like I said, lets see it for a few more games and then we can all have a more educated discussion on this topic. One game does not make or break a QB regardless of who we're discussing.

I understand where you are coming from and people do overreact because it's just human nature. However, you can't really fault them for the excitement.
Like you said, Smith is just like a game manager. He might not lose games for you but you can't count on him to win games for you either. You know exactly what you are getting with Smith-- Trent Dilfer!! At this day and age, a team really need a "elite" QB to win the SB and imo, Smith will never be one.
