Before we close the door on everything non-Masters, one final look at a good story from this past weekend. Phil Mickelson takes grief for pretty much everything he does or doesn't do, from his appearance to his attitude to his game. And even though he's been struck by tragedy in the past year -- the cancer diagnoses on both his wife and mother -- he's still the PGA player most fans love to goof on.
But you can't deny the guy knows how to show some love. Like this past weekend at the Shell Houston Open, when he brought on a special caddy for a few holes -- the doctor who's been treating his wife and mother.
Mickelson had invited Dr. Tom Buchholz, a radiation oncologist at Houston's M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, to the tournament along with many other doctors and hospital staff. And on Sunday, on the 14th tee, when Phil was out of contention -- hold the jokes for half a second -- he invited Buchholz to take the bag from regular caddy Bones Mackay.
That's one hell of a cool gesture, isn't it? It cost Phil absolutely nothing -- matter of fact, it might have helped. Buchholz helped Phil to a birdie on 14, and suddenly a one-hole stint turned into three holes.
"Three great reads, three great clubs," Mickelson said later. "It was only supposed to go one hole. I ended up making birdie, and I kept making birdies. We went 3-for-3 together." Buchholz had some experience as a caddy, having looped after college. But it wasn't his green-reading skills that put him on the bag.
"This man has helped us through some of the toughest times that we've gone through," Mickelson said. "He's the best at what he does."
Nice move from Mickelson. If the Gods of Augusta respect karma, Lefty's going in with a little extra bump.

Lefty has class. A lot of the tour guys would do something cool like this....except for one selfish, arrogant, too good, egotistical player, that swats clubs on the ground, cusses, and complains, and has a caddie that said Phil has man tits.

hes really changed over the years, used to come off as an arrogant prick but has lightened up over the years.....and it didnt happen when his wife got sick...seemed like he changed when he won a couple majors.....apparently he signs 1000 autographs for every 1 that tiger signs.

was listening to Conrad Dobler on the radio....talking about disabled NFL retirees.....lack of funds....++++ He told a story of how Mickelson heard of Dobler's problems....(he is fucked up pretty bad)...and simply called up....and offered to put Dobler's kids thru college.....WHEREVER they wanted to go !.......wow * and .....you gotta figure Phil has done a lot more than this......> stuff we don't know about ..
The impediment to action advances action - what stands in the way becomes the way.

I used to work for a Country Club during the summer, when I was in college, doing golf bitch shit, like washing carts and picking the range and stuff.
THe owner of KPMG is a member at my club, so Lefty does a demo there once a year.
One year he was coming off the range and I grabbed his bag for him and carried it into the clubhouse. About a 50 yard walk. He only gave me a $20. I mean, not terrible......but I was expecting a Hundo Bomb, not gonna lie

oh the work I did wasn't worth $5 let alone a twenty spot. But he pulled out a fucking Tony Soprano roll w/ at LEAST 10k in it, and had to flip through about 5k worth of hundos to get to his twentys. Just give me a hundo man, don't be stingy

Dude you want him to tip $100 to every loser he comes into contact with.

i too like to rank of Lefty. i enjoy rooting against him, and the only reason why is because i loved the story about how he was the best to never win a major for so long. i wanted him to carry that torch forever, just because it was funny. then he won and i now root for him to lose.
same reason i root for an 0-16 football team
same reason i wished the Nets didn't win a game this year

I have not liked him since I had him at 8-1 to win in New Orleans 8-10 years ago. He went into the final day in the lead but choked and let the hometown boy win. I still pull for him once in a while, like now.
