Must be the coaching. It's been a few years since any of the aforementioned teams lost 5 games in a season.
Florida is the only one that is relevant b/c of the disparity in depth of the conferences. And they lost 4 games in 2007 with a couple of wins against mediocre competition (OM and KY) that could have gone either way and a similarly weak OOC schedule like LSU in 2008.
So I don't see that statement as being so definitive about talent level, the most direct comp (Florida) had a similar year recently, and that was without the QB issues and DC changes that LSU struggled with. If Tebow went down in 2007 and they had depended on 3 guys with zero experience, what would their record have been? They easily could have lost 6 or more.
There are 2 relatively objective ways to judge talent-- the ratings of the recruiting services at the time of signing, and even more significant, the NFL draft results. LSU is very comparable with those teams on both, except for USC in the draft, which has been at another level from all.
Don't have a strong opinion on this game, but I think the talent statement doesn't really stand up. And if it does, it will show up in the draft numbers the next 2 or 3 years but it hasn't yet.
