Let's forget about the mismanagent of the pen and of the staff in the Nats series. Why? Because the Cubs once again bailed Maddon out. Let's talk about last nite. First, I bet the Cubs last nite and am totally fine losing that bet. So this is not a post complaining about my pick or making excuses. I just want someone to clarify what I saw:
In one corner, you have the Dodgers. Tie game, 9th inning, who gets the ball? Their best player, Jansen. Why, why not? You plan for the now, you get your best out there and then you hope the bats do what they need to do. Did it work? Yep. No overthinking either. Yet, in the 9th, for the Cubs, who is in? John Lackey everyone. He gets brought in to get Taylor out. Lackey, back to back nites out of the pen and he's the guy? Hmmmm. You have Wade Davis, arguably a top 3 closer in the game and the guy isn't even warming up? Some may want to give me the excuse that he's been overused? I'd take an "overused Davis over a rested Lackey any day out of the pen". Doesn't that situation call for your absolute BEST reliever considering there is a runner in scoring position? Ok so Maddon goes with Lackey who walks Taylor. Not the end of the world but what I saw next blew my mind. Turner comes up and you stick with Lackey? Really? 5-7 with risp?! First off, you misuse Lackey completely. Lackey isn't a one or two out guy; he's a starter and if used other than that, as seen, he takes a while to get into a groove. Cubs fans know, if he is able to get out of the first inning, he does well but that's a big IF. So why in back to back nites is this the guy? No idea.
ARE THE BATS OF THE CUBS TO BLAME MORE THAN ANYTHING; 100% YES. I capitalize because I understand the struggle there but as a manager you have to put your team in the best possible situation to win the game or at least extend it. Last nite, and this is why I chose the dodgers in the series, Maddon did it again. Last year, they got very lucky in back to back series but this time around, it seems to be running out and with that, I'd think now I the time where Cubs fans can't keep seeing a manager be stubborn and clueless as to what the common sense moves are. Can anyone seriously give me a smart explanation as to why Maddon did what he did last nite. Yes, game over, we move on but for those who are gonna bet on the Cubs going forward, help those feel confident with that bet. Thanks.

The game was set up for the Dodgers to win on the RL. So much money was on the Cubs ML and the Cubs RL. Its all about MONEY!!! The league and Vegas already knew who is going to win the WS. Stop asking why this or why that, these games were set up. End of story.

First off, don't come in here and preach to the choir. I didn't ask why the Cubs lost. I already know smart guy. This is more about an overrated manager and a team running out of luck. Read the last sentence of my original post. Now go on with your bad seif. Smh

He did explain why Maddon did what he did. He put in a guy susceptible to the HR all year, to give up the 3 runs for the Dodgers RL to cover. You think a guy making millions every year is that dumb to put in Lackey because that was his best option? You said it yourself, the move didn't make sense, so the only explanation is that vegas wanted the Dodgers -1.5 to cover

I guess that you are really that stupid; it's all about money fool. It does not matter about overrated manager or coaches. These fools do some stupid things during games. Why? Once again, they all set up. Stop asking stupid question why this and why that after the game.

Ground breaking insight. Very lucky have to read all of this. Thanks man. By the way: since it's clear greatness is upon this thread: what is your record in baseball, NFL and NCAA? Very curious. I'd think with your stance on money, you're undefeated and living at the top of a hill with riches upon riches.

Better yet: WINDY8899, post those plays going forward. I haven't paid attention to you but now that you know the result of every game because it's PURELY about money, I'm very anxious to see "Biff" with his almanac in the future. Thanks WINDY8899.

So Maddon puts on Lackey, in order for the books to make $$$?! It's just sick, how easy people go to a conspiracy theory, instead of at least try and think about a reasonable argument.
Achilles, imo you've already answered your own question in the first post, Maddon is really that poor of a manager, when it comes to situations like this... lets not forget what he did in game 7 of the WS and how close it was, and if not for Chapman's effort, i think the outcome would've been the opposite.
Remember that what Chapman said about Maddon, that he thought he overworked him throughout the whole postseason, maybe that's one of the reasons he resigned with the Yankees, apart from the better pay and the fact that he loves the city...

Yes I know how Vegas used super technology to radio into Maddons brain to put in Lackey to throw a watermelon right down the middle. Damn you vegas! How can we compete with that kind of tech?

Maddon thinks he is some great outside the box thinker which he just may be. However, thinking inside the box would have been the easier decision here. As a matter of fact, Duensing looked pretty decent in his relief, he could have just left him in there if he didn't want to go to Davis in the 9th. Anyone but Lackey, his days are way over. And yes, not using Davis was dumb, but if he has a lead going into the 8th on Tuesday, I guarantee you he sends him out to work 2 innings for that game.
At the end of the day Bryant and Rizzo are not hitting. You won't win many games scoring a run or two. And how about Heyward, what a useless bat he has been for the past 2 years. Miserable hitter.

Joe Giradi did it the other night with chapman. I could see why Lackey was in.... to eat innings in hope Cubs take lead to put Davis in. I was not happy with yankee using chapman. You lose your guy after inning or 2 then you shot your load. My guess was Maddon hoping to keep a tie then get lead then use Davis. Personally I am against using my closer in that position.. I think tonight Yankees beat Houston ... g l

agree.......maddon is super overrated........time and time again he makes the incorrect percentage play........and now the variance and odds are catching up with his poor decision making.........i will not bet one more $ on the cubs right now........not backing clowns! lmao

Stupid logic but i really think Joe was hoping to put Davis in with a lead in the bottom of the 10th. Only problem is you got to get to the 10th first. When you have a lesser pen you have to do desperate garbage to keep up with the best pen in the MLB. Cubs wont win these type of games. They can only compete if theyre hitting the garbage out of the ball. Just like they did vs the Nats.

Actually Davis was warming up along with lackey. Maddon decided to put him in. I was at the game and trust they were both warming up at the same time. Maddon must've thought he could trust lackey for just one out to get through. Happens. I ain't mad, had the Dodgers myself.

Wade Davis is not a Top 3 closer in the game. Not maybe, not kinda, not almost, not quite possibly. He's just not.
Secondly, Maddon turned out to be the goat in this. He took a risk that Lackey could help him save Wade for later in the game. Didn't work out. Vegas didn't call, Maddon wasn't paid off. Turner RISP could have done the same thing to Wade.

I'm not gonna argue about Davis and where he ranks. In my eyes, well any baseball person who has knowledge of the game, a guy who has blown two saves all year....that's pretty damn good. The numbers support my claim but whatever. Lackey or Davis and Maddon chose Lackey. So "let's be honest here"......Davis was the better option with basically the season on the line. Plain and simple. You ALWAYS go with your best player for that given situation; you play for the moment especially in that situation.
