Football bettors worry about the wind. Basketball bettors refer to the refs. And WWE bettors risk the chance of a chair to the face spoiling their wager. That’s all part of the game when it comes to betting on the fantastical world of professional wrestling.

Wagering on the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) is quickly becoming a popular play among bettors looking to cash in on the company’s pay-per-view events, like this Sunday’s Royal Rumble in Phoenix, Arizona.

“The Royal Rumble and Wrestlemania are the obvious standout events and although we price them up aimed at the recreational bettor for recreational stakes, we always see good two-way action,” Russ Candler, of online sportsbook, told Covers.

The process for setting the odds for WWE events is similar to that of posting the line on a football game - experts in the sport crunching the numbers and giving their opinions to form a line that will draw two-way action. However, due to the unpredictable nature of pro wrestling, limits are kept very low.

“It’s purely probability then linked into the margin that we’re prepared to bet the market to,” says Candler. “The views coming from the traders with a sick fascination for the WWE.”

“It’s a proper sport don’t you know,” he jokes.

The main event of Sunday’s card is the 30-man Royal Rumble match. Two men start out in the ring with an additional wrestler added every 90 seconds until only one man remains. Combatants are eliminated by being tossed over the top rope and having both feet touch the floor. The winner gets an automatic title shot.

This year’s favorite is 10-time WWE champ John Cena (-125), who won the Royal Rumble in 2008. is offering the entire 29-man field at -111 or is allowing WWE bettors to pick from a list of contenders, highlighted by fan favorites Ryback (+300), Dolph Ziggler (+300) and Randy Orton (+600).

“Of those that are already confirmed, (Cena) is the out-and-out star,” says Candler. “The early money has been for him not to win – not the worst bet in the world as you have 29 fighters running for your money.” is also offering odds on the WWE Championship - CM Punk (+225) vs. The Rock (-357), World Heavyweight Championship – Alberto Del Rio (-1,250) vs. Big Show (+500), and the WWE Tag Team title match – Team Hell No (+400) vs. Rhodes Scholars (-833).
