NFL betting: Tony Romo has season-ending back surgery

Dec 27, 2013 |
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo underwent back season-ending back surgery Friday, said coach Jason Garret.

"The procedure happened this morning," Garrett told reporters. "We felt the surgery went well. Tony should be able to come home later today and start his rehabilitation."

Kyle Orton will start at quarterback for the Cowboys (8-7 ATS) when they host the Philadelphia Eagles (8-7 ATS) Sunday, in a matchup that will determine who clinches the NFC East title and who misses the playoffs altogether.

The Cowboys opened as 1.5-point home dogs, but early in the week when rumors began to swirl Romo would be out with a back injury early, the line jumped as high as Dallas +7.5. It has settled at Dallas +6.5. For updated odds click here.

Romo received an epidural shot Monday to treat a herniated disk in his back and missed practice Thursday. Until early Friday, the Cowboys said they were unsure if Romo would play.

Romo threw for 3,828 yards with 31 touchdowns and 10 interceptions this year.
