Super bowl action report: Books finding balance at 49ers -4

Feb 3, 2013 |
Super Bowl XLVII is mere hours from kickoff and action is picking up. Money on the San Francisco 49ers has pushed the spread as high as -4.5 at some markets, while Baltimore Ravens backers are snatching up those inflated odds as they pop up.

We get the inside scoop on the early betting patterns on Super Bowl Sunday from online book and check out the action at the Peppermill Resort Spa and Casino in Reno, Nevada, where lines are already out the door.

Baltimore Ravens vs. San Francisco 49ers (-4, 48)

The betting public is finally having its say after sharps jumped on the Ravens in the two weeks prior to the Big Game. San Francisco, which was as low as a 3-point favorite, is now as large as -4.5 at some books.

One of those books,, went to 4.5 and immediately moved back down to -4 with Ravens bettors quick to take the extra half point. It seems they’ve found the balance point for spread bettors, dealing the Niners -4 (-115) as of Noon ET.

“At this time, across a sizable volume and a large number of wagers, one interesting wagering angle on this game is that the difference in money wagered is below $10,000,” told Covers. “Throwing in teasers and parlays, the exposure is below $20,000 both in favor of Baltimore.”

In Reno, the close proximity to California and a rabid Colin Kaepernick fan base, due to his college days with Nevada, make the Peppermill Ground Zero for San Francisco backers. The spreads have been slightly higher there compared to Las Vegas and online in the weeks leading up but Ravens action is beginning to show.

“The lines are already to the back of the room and they all seem to be wearing scarlet jerseys, so I assume they’re all betting the Niners,” Terry Cox, director of race and sports at the Peppermill, told Covers. “But we did get our share of Ravens money. We were at four and went to -4.5 this morning. Those people betting the Ravens were just waiting on it, and boom, boom, boom.”

The total for Super Bowl XLVII is also seeing a major swing in action. After taking a lot of bets on the under in the first two weeks since post, money is pouring in on the over and has moved the number as high as 48.5 at some Las Vegas books.

According to, total betting was still leaning slightly toward the under in terms of bet count and money wagered. In Reno, the number is also trending up and could close 48.5 or higher. Cox says it’s not just the recreational bettors getting in on the over, big bets are starting to come in and push the number up.

“It’s not just coming in here, it’s coming in everywhere,” he says. “If the game were to go right now, San Francisco and under or Baltimore and over would be good for us.”
