Jets or Falcons? Bloggers debate who will cover

Monday Night Football features the Atlanta Falcons playing host to the New York Jets in Week 5. Oddsmakers have set the Falcons as big 10.5-point home favorites.

In order to get an inside look into this matchup, we’ve enlisted the help of those who know these teams the best. Expert NFL bloggers Joe Caporoso of New York blog “Turn On The Jets” and Dave Choate from Atlanta blog “The Falcoholic” strap on the pads and debate which team will not only win, but cover the spread Monday night.

WHY NEW YORK WILL COVER

New York Sack Exchange 2.0

The Jets defensive line has been dominant through the first quarter of the season. Don't be fooled by the Titans’ point total last week. The overwhelming majority of their points came directly off turnovers and from working on a short field.

Atlanta's banged up offensive line is going to have their hands more than full with Muhammad WIlkerson, Sheldon Richardson, Damon Harrison and Quinton Coples. Atlanta isn't going to be able to run the football on the Jets and Matt Ryan should be under a good deal of pressure throughout most of the night.

Run, Marty run

If offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg will oblige, the Jets should be able to run the football on Atlanta's front seven. Bilal Powell is tied for the AFC lead in rushing yards and the addition of Mike Goodson should add an infusion of speed to the backfield. If the Jets can establish the run, it will help protect Geno Smith and keep Matt Ryan, Julio Jones & Co. off the field.

Bounce back Geno?

Last week was a nightmare for rookie Geno Smith. However, after he had a similarly rough outing against the New England Patriots in Week 2, he responded with a strong game against the Buffalo Bills, throwing for over 300 yards, two touchdowns and rushing for another touchdown. Smith doesn't need to set the world on fire Monday night, he just needs to protect the football and the Jets should be able to keep it close.

WHY ATLANTA WILL COVER

Dave Choate is the editor-in-chief at The Falcoholic. You can follow them on Facebook and Twitter @TheFalcoholic.

The pass rush cometh

The Falcons have the opportunity to rush the passer in this one. The front seven is banged up, but the Jets' offensive line and Geno Smith's understandable rookie habit of throwing bad passes under the pressure gives them a favorable matchup. The Falcons should look to turn their fortunes around by using their athletic defense to get after Smith.

Matt Ryan is excellent

The Jets' defense is formidable, but the Falcons have Matt Ryan. The quarterback has been lights out despite a middling offensive line and injuries in front of him. I see no reason why he won't have one of his trademark efficient performances despite the very real difficulties facing him.

Home, sweet home

The Falcons simply play better at home. The Georgia Dome and the crowd work in their favor on a regular basis and taking on this Jets team in Atlanta should make all the difference.

"Matt Ryan is excellent" Wow, such deep profound thought. "..., but the Falcons have Matt Ryan." Assume that was also the case Falcons played Saints, Fins, & Pats. N'est-ce pas?
