Vikes still faves in Week 1 despite Peterson setback

Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier announced Tuesday that Adrian Peterson will be held out of preseason action, leading to speculation the star running back won’t be ready for the season opener against Jacksonville on Sept. 9.

The Vikings are still 4.5-point favorites over the Jaguars with the total set at 38, according to Second-string tailback Toby Gerhart will likely see the majority of carries even if Peterson suits up in Week 1.

Peterson was taken off the physically unable to perform list on Aug. 12 and has participated in four practices in full gear, but hasn’t taken any contact since he tore the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee last Christmas Eve.

Minnesota’s next game comes Friday against San Diego. The Vikes are 2.5-point home favorites with the total set at 42.5.

They'll close the preseason Aug. 30 at Houston.

But there is no setback.

Peterson says he's ready and wants to play; the team (and trainers) are making the decisions. If he plays week 1, it will be a handful of carries. That said, Gerhart is no slouch. He's better out of the backfield and he's better picking up the blitz. Certainly much better than a rusty Peterson if you ask me.
