Hot lines: Saturday's best MLB bets

St. Louis Cardinals at Pittsburgh Pirates (116, 8)

Albert Pujols is gone, but that doesn't mean the Cardinals aren't still the defending champions. They are, and they're playing like it.

St. Louis is 10-4 and kicked off a three-game set at Pittsburgh with a 4-1 victory on Friday night. The team is 6-2 on the road so far in 2012.

Chris Carpenter is on the disabled list, but Jake Westbrook is picking up the slack. The 6-foot-3 righty has made two starts for the year and will toe the rubber again for this one. He is 2-0 and boasts a 0.64 ERA, having allowed only one earned run in 14 innings.

New manager Mike Matheny made sure to have Westbrook hear his voice during spring training.

“I wanted to reinforce to him his style of pitching, which is the exact same philosophy this organization has, which is pound the bottom of the zone, make guys put it in play,” Matheny explained. “I believe we have the kind of defense that can make a lot of plays for him.”

Pick: Cardinals

Minnesota Twins at Tampa Bay Rays (-181, 7.5)

The Twins were expected to be one of the worst teams in baseball and they have not disappointed in that regard. Even after edging Tampa Bay 5-4 on Friday night, Minnesota is 5-9 overall and 3-5 on the road.

Adding insult to injury, the Twins have to go up against James Shields on Saturday. In three starts this season, Shields is 2-0 with a 3.38 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 21 1/3 innings. The righty has gone at least eight innings in each of his last two outings and he allowed no runs on four hits in a 1-0 win at Boston on Monday.

Minnesota is countering with Carl Pavano, who has been solid at times but mostly unspectacular so far in 2012. Through three starts the veteran right-hander is 1-1 with a 5.23 ERA.

The Rays are 3-1 at home this season and they are 10-2 in their last 12 home games against right-handed starters dating back to last season. The are 8-0 in Shields' last eight starts at Tropicana Field.

Pick: Rays

Verlander or not if they're offering me a scremin' hot TEX team with Feliz on the bump who's also looked solid in his 2 starts this year at +145 I gotta take a poke at it.................................................................................................11-3 LAD vs the 5-9 HOU + Carlos Lee, Chris Johnson and Jed Lowrie are a combined 1-for-28 against left-handed pitchers this season + Kershaw vs Weiland = LAD -1.5 -120 for this guy.....................................................................................As a JAYS fan I watched A.J "Another Joint" Burnett for years and with way the Cards roll up their lineup over even if he's pitching well most of the day it's likely he'll still have that one brutal crooked inning. STL has the edge in bats and starter in this one,-135 seems fair.................................................................................. I hit with the Twins last night as decent dogs and maybe I'm going back to the well to soon here but TB (even with Big Game James Shields on the hill) are way overpriced at -190 IMHO. Also Pavano has done well against a pair of the RAYS bigger bats. Longoria is 2-for-13 and Carlos Pena 1-for-11 against him.................................................................................................... I know KC is gonna win their 60 games (maybe lol) but until they get their shit together I gotta take their opponent, especially a scrappy JAYS team basically as a pick'em. Plus the JAYS have a good young arm coming up for this game that nobody has seen before..............................................................................................MIL usually does very well at home so I really don't see them being swept in this series especially with Yovani on the hill tomorrow, taking the Brewers and re-uping on them if they lose tonight............................................................................................Braves for the same reason as yesterday, bats are en fuego.................................................................Doc only -140 against the shitty-ass Puds.....deal

The only change on my puck picks is that I went 2-3 only lost -1.25 units last night and not 0-8 and a minus a dime which I'm now down 2 of on the week for pucks. The bases continue to roll along alright going 6-3 for +3.05 units to get me to 64-61-2 +6.45 units on the year. And maybe I should have been betting hoops all year cuz they've been sweet this week (+5.5 units) and last night hitting both plays for +3.65 units. I did drop my lone mixed sport parlay so +4.45 units on the day and a dent in the weeks deficit. For this afternoon..........................................................................NHL(1)BOS reg -0.5 -110 (2)WASH/BOS U 5 pick (3)BOS -1.5 to NYR -1.5 to STL ML to PHX ML -125 +1810.........................................................................................MLB(1)SEA +1.5 to the U 7 +205 (2)NYY/BOS O 11 -105..................................................Enjoy the games

They changed it over for hockey this year too so I was expecting it. And although I believe it's currently trickier to find what you're looking for there is ultimately more info and we'll get used to it. It did take me almost twice as long as normal to due my plays yesterday but that was due to being unfamiliar with the layout, all the info was there which is the main thing.

I concur with TJG3P...I'd like to see who pitch for the two teams right away and then scroll down the team history. No harm to express one's opinions. Peace.

Your opinion is valid TJ and you certainly haven't said anything here that warrants being removed from the thread. Let's reserve that exercise for the people who violate the spirit of these forums with pettiness and insults. That said, i actually like the new match-up page, but I don't mind the scrolling, and I appreciate the fact that everything is just a bit more legible. I do agree that the consensus box is large-ish and I'm not sure if I need the largest statistic on the page to be opinion based, but maybe the editors at covers are catering to the users who value a more "community" based experience, rather than strictly statistical. And, you know, reading the public action is certainly a factor in handicapping. Just one opinion and good luck this weekend.

@covers-The new MLB match up page is just horrible. The page needs to be shortened up. Your basically giving same great info as always but the page feels like it has doubled in size. Example_Consensus Analysis should be a quarter of the size. I want to crunch numbers not scroll! Just my opinion & fan of site...Covers mods feel free to take down once read
