Monday night debate: Who'll cover the spread?

We hauled out the big guns for this week's Monday night game. NFL bloggers Ben Folsom of the Curly R and James Trotta of NFL-Giants dish the goods on each team and answer the questions bettors are debating leading up to MNF.

New York Giants at Washington Redskins (+3, 43.5)

Ben Folsom gives us the inside track on the Redskins.

Should Washington fans be happy with the shakeup in the front office? Will it affect the players at all this week?

The answer to this question is YES, YES, A THOUSAND TIMES YES. Redskins fans were in the streets Thursday night, it was like the liberation of an occupied city.

Vinny Cerrato symbolizes much of what has been wrong with the Redskins for most of the past decade, it all comes back to owner Dan Snyder to be sure, and that has not changed. What Redskins fans hope will change is the sycophantic atmosphere in Ashburn, that Dan Snyder finally had the stones to hire someone with the clout and experience to tell him when his football intuition is wrong.

The hiring of Bruce Allen as the team's first general manager in the Dan Snyder Era signals for every player the beginning of a three-game tryout for 2010. With the lack of a salary cap looming for next season, even the high priced players are expendable.

The Skins are averaging 29.3 points over their last three games. Is the Sherm Lewis offense coming together or is this just a fluke?

This is the big debate in Washington. I think it boils down to better execution rather than better play calling under Sherm Lewis. As injuries mounted and the second-year skill players (receivers Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly and tight end Fred Davis) did not come on as strong as expected, the playbook has been trimmed. Thus a bunch of guys that would naturally get better working together throughout the season is benefiting from simplified, rather than improved, play-calling.

Washington has a ton of injuries. What injury/injuries do you think is having the most impact on the team down the stretch?

Without question it is injuries along the offensive line that are causing the greatest disruption in the Redskins performance.  Two key starters, left tackle Chris Samuels and right guard Randy Thomas, were lost for the season early, then the right guard and right tackle positions were shuffled like a deck of cards.  Even this week it looks like the Redskins will be starting a former practice squad player at right tackle, who like the starting tailback and starting left guard were not on the Redskins roster to start the season.

Why do you think the Skins will cover the spread?

The Redskins will cover this spread by keeping the score low in a game featuring more defense than offense.

Final score prediction: Redskins 23, Giants 17

James Trotta gives insight on the G-Men.

Is there a secondary in worst shape health-wise than the Giants'?

Probably, although I don't know enough about all the NFL teams to say with certainty. The Giants lost Kenny Phillips for the season - he's good but no one thought of him as the back

Redskins already have one of the best D's and there offense has shown alot of improvment the last few weeks. Giants started 5-0 since 2-6. Also these teams played a close game in NY earlier this year 23-17 I like the Skins ML 23-20

This article is a speculative waste of time. How can Trotta say the Skins will kick more field goals? What, that great NY defense is going to stop them? Everybody's guessing on this game, side and total.

so you tell me, when you are fighting not only for the #1 home field advantage seed BUT also the #2 bye seed and you are leading 7-6 in the 2nd half of your third last game, why would you want to pull your QB who is your star? And when he refuses because HE wants to win, you go and take out his usual offensive linemen so he is pressured constantly the rest of the way? open your eyes! belichick trying on 4th on his 28 up 6 points 2 min left in game

I said for days Saints would not show up! Jones spent too damn much on a stadium to not allow him to make the playoffs. How'd you like Brees who was in the tank tonight come out with his most dangerous offense in the league and on the first 2 three and outs he handed off once and threw 5 passes all 5 yards or LESS AHEAD OF HIM, a couple behind the line of scrimmage. And as I always say when you WANT to lose you don't pressure the QB which is what they did on ther first 2 Dallas drives both ending up in touchdowns for a team that hadn't scored a first drive TD in 17 games! Yes, score appeared to be close because Dallas' choking kicker missed after Saints were forced to NOT pressure Romo because the score was getting too close and he of course marched them right down the field. You know just like the WWF when the wrestler is beat up and nearly dead then miraculously reenergizes and is about to pin the other guy BUT then the other guy revives himself and still beats him. This is today's FIXED NFL! Another score made tonight! If a guy like that boxer Witherspoon bets $1 million dollars on NFL you can imagine what these NFL owners do. Note- a couple years back Indy was undefeated at about 11-0 and a 3 point favorite over Dallas but just before game odds dropped suddenly to even and Dallas easily beat them. ON NATIONALLY TELEVISED ONLY GAME IN COUNTRY ALL BETTING ACTION IS ON. Giants-Browns 2008 Steelers-Browns 2009 Cards-49ers 2009 Cowboys-Saints 2009 Giants-Broncos 2009 etc., etc., etc., ..... 2009 NFL = WWF!

NOTE- THE NIGHT NATIONALLY TELEVISED 80% OF ALL FOOTBALL BETS ON THE HEAVY FAVORITE AND SUPERIOR TEAM

This has been a week of upsets for me so I havew to pick the underdog redskins and over. Why? Because it's in the hunch that minor players will rise to the occassion of prime time football because the Skins are going to have a roster change, they all know that, and nobody what to be cut next year. I am looking to a hard fought game with two average NFL teams. The home field fans will give them the motivation to play hard football with all the football world watching.
