Anderson Silva will face perhaps his toughest test when he climbs inside the Octagon against Chris Weidman at UFC 162. At least that’s what oddsmakers think heading into the bout on July 6.

Nick Kalikas of MMAOddsbreaker.com has set the UFC middleweight champ as a -215 favorite versus Weidman (+165), which are Silva’s tightest odds since tangling with Dan Henderson as a -165 favorite back in 2008.

“I made the line this way because Weidman has a legit shot at winning this fight,” Kalikas told Covers. “Weidman is a bigger guy who belongs in the middleweight division and his wrestling is enough of a factor to give Silva problems.”

Kalikas notes that Silva has struggled with superior grapplers at time, like Henderson, Travis Lutter, and most recently Chael Sonnen. Weidman, the No. 3 middleweight in the world, is 9-0 with three wins by each KO, submission and decision. Just five of those victories have come in the UFC, something that weighs heavily on the minds of MMA bettors.

“My main concern with Weidman is his inexperience,” says Kalikas. “He’s taken many of his fights on short notice and this is his first time in deep water.”

Weidman’s cardio is his biggest weakness heading into the five-round championship bout. Many of Silva’s victims have started the match strong but dwindled in the late rounds, becoming mistake prone and leaving the door open for Silva.

Despite Silva turning 38 before the bout, his greatest attribute has been his cardio and ability to stay calm when pressed early. “The Spider” hasn’t shown any signs of an age decline, but fighters tend to grow old overnight, something oddsmakers must be wary of.

“Age is a factor, in boxing and MMA,” says Kalikas. “(Silva) hasn’t shown signs of it yet but you never know. All great runs have to come to an end sometime.”
