My analysis
Despite a Herculean effort from WNBA leading scorer Jewell Lloyd, the Seattle Storm finished 11th in the league standings, which didn’t sit well with Storm leadership.
The Storm front office hit the free agency market hard and came up with a pair of gems, and one of them is 33-year-old free agent Skylar Diggins-Smith.
Diggins-Smith isn’t the best shooter the WNBA has ever seen, but her cutting ability to the paint is money. She gets to this spot on the floor as well as anyone, and her decent mid-range shooting capabilities have allowed her to shoot 42% from the field and bag 16.7 points per night over her nine-year career.
The 33-year-old former Phoenix Mercury standout has been more of a facilitator during Seattle’s two preseason tilts; she played 20 minutes in each clash and scored 21 total points. Her shot isn’t falling so she’s adopted the playmaker's role, and that’s what I believe her primary role will be tonight.
Seattle is a new team, and they’ll need time to figure things out. The Storm guard is still not where she was physically; her last WNBA game was two seasons ago. The Minnesota Lynx have bulked up their interior defense, and getting to her spots and scoring in the lane may not be as easy as it was for her to do in the past. The Storm guard is struggling to find her stroke but has opted to become a playmaker first and won’t likely take enough shots or play enough minutes to score 17.5 points.
Diggins-Smith will have her big scoring nights, but tonight won’t be one of them.

The Lynx may not have chased the flashy free agents like their opponents, but they know who they are during crunch time and have a solid core of returning players led by the incomparable Napheesa Collier and guard Kayla McBride.
Seattle doesn’t know who they are yet; they’ve made great offseason moves but lack experience playing together. That rebuilt offense meets a bolstered Lynx interior defense that will cause all sorts of trouble. This, along with the one-two punch of Collier and McBride, will allow them to cover the spread and keep this tilt under 164.5 points.
