Erik Kallgren stopped 35 shots to earn a shutout in his first NHL start as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the visiting Dallas Stars 4-0 on Tuesday night.

Kallgren made his NHL debut with 30:20 in relief on Thursday in Toronto's overtime loss to the Arizona Coyotes.

John Tavares had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs, who had lost two in a row. Rasmus Sandin, Ondrej Kase and Ilya Mikheyev also scored for Toronto. Mitchell Marner and Morgan Rielly each added two assists.

Jake Oettinger stopped 36 shots for the Stars, who started a four-game road trip with their third loss in a row.

Dallas had a 13-10 advantage in shots on goal after the first period, but Toronto had the only two goals.

Sandin scored his fifth of the season at 7:22 on Toronto's first shot on target. After taking Marner's pass, Sandin put in a backhand from the edge of the crease that brushed the shaft of the stick of Dallas defenseman Jani Hakanpaa.

Tavares deflected William Nylander's shot at 11:16 first for his 20th goal of the season.

Toronto had a 28-26 advantage in shots on goal for the game after a goalless second period.

Kase scored his 13th goal of the season at 52 seconds of the third period on a power play, shooting from the slot after a pass from Rielly. Roope Hintz was off for hooking.

Oettinger made a superb save on Nylander's deflection at 4:59 of the third. Kallgren withstood a Dallas barrage slightly more than 11 minutes into the period.

Mikheyev scored into an empty net at 18:36 of the third, his 11th goal of the season.

Toronto was without Auston Matthews, who was sitting out the first game of a two-game suspension after a cross-checking incident in a loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday.

Brothers Jason Robertson of the Stars and Nicholas Robertson of the Maple Leafs played against each other for the first time in the NHL.

Toronto's No. 1 goaltender Jack Campbell (rib) remains out.
