Freshman quarterback Brock Purdy threw for a touchdown, ran for another and even caught a two-point conversion pass to lead No. 22 Iowa State to a wild 28-14 win over visiting Baylor on Saturday afternoon in Ames, Iowa.

Purdy hit on 18 of 23 passes for 230 yards in the fifth straight win for the Cyclones (6-3, 5-2 Big 12). The victory keeps Iowa State in the mix for a spot in the league championship game.

Charlie Brewer led Baylor (5-5, 3-4) with 288 passing yards and two touchdowns while rushing for a career-high 72 yards on 12 carries. Brewer was ejected from the game for a second unsportsmanlike conduct penalty during a Bears' drive with less than six minutes left in the game.

Baylor outgained Iowa State 505-355 but couldn't turn the gains into points.

The Cyclones got on the board late in the first quarter when Purdy hit Deshaunte Jones with an 11-yard touchdown pass at the end of an 11-play, 80-yard march.

Baylor had a chance to cut into the lead on its ensuing drive but Connor Martin's 31-yard field goal attempt clanked off the right upright.

Purdy produced another touchdown on Iowa State's next possession, capping an eight-play, 80-yard drive with his 2-yard scoring run for a 14-0 lead.

The Bears threatened again, using 12 plays to move 66 yards before Martin missed once more, pulling his 29-yard field goal try wide left.

Connor Assalley's 34-yard field goal with five seconds left gave the Cyclones a 17-0 halftime lead.

Assalley added a 37-yard field goal with 9:38 to play in the third quarter to expand the lead to 20-0.

Baylor finally got on the board with a 6-yard TD pass from Brewer to Denzel Mims at the end of a 15-play, 92-yard drive that cut the Iowa State advantage to 20-7 with 1:56 to play in the third quarter.

The Cyclones responded immediately as Johnnie Lang rumbled 8 yards for a touchdown one play after a 38-yard strike from Purdy to Matthew Eaton II.

Brewer hit Pooh Stricklin on a 7-yard scoring pass with 12:25 to play to bring the Bears back to within 14 points.

Iowa State star running back and captain David Montgomery and Baylor defensive end Greg Roberts were also ejected from the game for throwing punches during a melee between the two teams with 10:30 to play in the third quarter. Both players will miss the first half of their respective games next week as well.
