No. 21 UCLA 58, Nevada 20: Brett Hundley rushed for two scores and threw for two more as the host Bruins cruised past the Wolf Pack in the season opener for both teams.
Hundley, a sophomore who set school records for passing yards and completions in his first season, picked up right where he left off by taking his first carry 37 yards for a touchdown and UCLA never trailed. Hundley, who took his first collegiate carry 72 yards for a score last season, finished with 63 yards on the ground and passed for 274 more by completing 22-of-33 attempts.
The loss spoiled the coaching debut of Brian Polian, the replacement for Chris Ault, who retired after 28 seasons at Nevada. The son of former NFL executive Bill Polian watched his team surrender 647 yards of offense to the high-powered Bruins.
UCLA started a bit slowly and needed two strong defensive stands to maintain a slim lead in the first half. Nevada cut the deficit to 17-13 just before halftime when quarterback Cody Fajardo capped an 11-play, 81-yard drive with a 1-yard run.
The Bruins put the game away with 20 unanswered points in the third quarter as Hundley and Jordon James (21 carries, 155 yards) scored on the ground and Phillip Ruhl returned a blocked punt for another touchdown. Led by fledgling Heisman hopeful Hundley, the Bruins poured it on by scoring three more touchdowns in a 4:17 span in the fourth quarter.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Brandon Wimberly caught three passes for the Wolf Pack. Wimberly has caught a pass in 41 straight games, the longest active streak among FBS teams. ...Fajardo passed for 164 yards and rushed for 106 on 22 carries. It is the seventh time he's rushed for more than 100 yards in his career. ... Jerry Neuheisel, the son of former UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel, took over for Hundley and led the Bruins on their final scoring drive.
