Recap: Middle Tennessee State 49, Georgia Tech 28

Middle Tennessee State 49, Georgia Tech 28: Benny Cunningham rushed for 217 yards and five touchdowns, leading the Blue Raiders of the Sun Belt to an upset of the host Yellow Jackets.

The beleaguered Georgia Tech defense gave up 510 yards of total offense to MTSU, one week after allowing 609 yards in an overtime loss to Miami. MTSU quarterback Logan Kilgore threw two touchdown passes and finished with 246 yards passing.

Georgia Tech (2-3) pulled within 35-28 on quarterback Tevin Washington’s fourth rushing touchdown of the game with 11:23 remaining, a 1-yard run. But the Blue Raiders (3-1) scored on Cunningham’s 4-yard run with 6:30 remaining to seal the victory.

Cunningham scored on runs of 60 and 1 yard in the second quarter, and added a 23-yard touchdown run four minutes into the second half to snap a 21-21 tie. Kilgore connected with Marcus Henry on a 75-yard touchdown pass with 1:59 left in the quarter to push MTSU’s lead to 35-21.

The Yellow Jackets committed four turnovers (three fumbles lost and one interception). Washington completed 14 of 22 passes for 146 yards. Orwin Smith rushed for 85 yards for Georgia Tech.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Cunningham had rushed for just 91 yards combined in his past three games. … Georgia Tech returns to ACC play next week at No. 16 Clemson. … Georgia Tech gave up a season high in points.
