No. 18 Virginia Tech 42, Austin Peay 7: Quarterback Logan Thomas passed for two touchdowns and rushed for one as the host Hokies pulled away from the Governors in the middle quarters.

Virginia Tech (2-0) started slow five days after beating Georgia Tech in its season opener. The Hokies led 7-0 after one quarter, then took control behind Thomas, who completed 15 of 23 passes for 212 yards.

Thomas scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak with 5:35 to go in the first half. He fired a 30-yard touchdown pass to Corey Fuller with 26 seconds left in the half and added a 13-yard touchdown pass to Randall Dunn with 2:30 left in the third.

Michael Holmes rushed for two touchdowns - a 2-yard run with 2:38 left in the first for the Hokies’ first touchdown, and a 9-yard burst with 7:51 on the clock in the third quarter.

Thomas’ two touchdowns in the final minutes of the half gave the Hokies a 21-0 halftime advantage. Terrence Oliver brought Austin Peay (0-2) within 28-7 on a 10-yard touchdown run with 5:45 left in the third, but Thomas needed only three minutes to lead the Hokies back to the end zone.

Austin Peay running back Wes Kitts rushed 22 times for 110 yards.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Generals finished 4-for-14 on third down. … Tony Gregory added an 18-yard touchdown run for Virginia Tech with 9:30 remaining. … The Hokies improved to 27-5 in September since 2005. … The game was the first between the two teams.
