Sacramento State 30, Colorado 28: Edgar Castaneda's 30-yard field goal as time expired lifted the visiting Hornets to an upset of a Pac-12 team for the second straight season.

The Hornets (1-1) took over at their own 15 with 4:42 remaining and moved 72 yards on nine plays to set up Castaneda, who split the uprights with his third field goal of the game. The winning drive was aided by two pass interference penalties.

Sacramento State, an FCS team which plays in the Big Sky Conference, won at Oregon State 29-28 in 2011.

Colorado's Christian Powell matched a school record for a freshman with three touchdowns, including a 64-yarder on his third career carry. His third TD - a 1-yard plunge with 6:27 left in the third quarter - gave Colorado (1-1) a 28-24 lead. Powell finished with 147 yards.

Safron, who was 25-of-37 passing for 312 yards and two touchdowns, took advantage of a Colorado secondary which was without starting defensive backs Ray Polk and Greg Henderson and started three freshmen. The Hornets outgained the Buffaloes 466-341.

Colorado, which rushed for 58 yards in its 22-17 loss to Colorado State last week, surpassed that total on one carry Saturday when Powell went 64 yards on the third play from scrimmage. Powell, who had one carry for 3 yards against Colorado State, scored on a 1-yard run midway through the first quarter to put the Buffaloes ahead 14-0.

Sacramento State erupted for 21 unanswered points before Colorado quarterback Jordan Webb found tight end Kyle Slavin for a 9-yard TD pass with 2:44 remaining in the half. Castaneda's 28-yard field goal with 23 seconds to go gave the Hornets a 24-21 halftime lead. Castaneda added a 31-yarder with 11:57 left.
