Led by Darron Thomas’ big day, No. 14 Oregon got back on track Saturday in its home opener.
Thomas threw five of his school record-tying six touchdown passes in the first half as the Ducks (1-1) rolled to a 69-20 victory over Nevada at Autzen Stadium.
The Ducks, coming off a 40-27 loss to No. 3 Louisiana State last week, won their home opener for the 18th time in 19 tries and improved to 18-3 against Western Athletic Conference opponents.
Thomas went 13-of-19 for 295 yards before exiting with 7:25 left in the third quarter and Oregon leading 55-13. Thomas’ previous high for touchdown passes was four, a feat he accomplished twice last year in wins against Portland State and Southern California.
But this performance will be tough to top, as Thomas had five touchdown passes of 20 yards or more, including a 44-yard strike to LaMichael James early in the second quarter and a 69-yard touchdown pass to De’Anthony Thomas late in the third.
De'Anthony Thomas finished with 174 total yards and a pair of scores.
Oregon took control early, scoring on five of its first six possessions as Nevada, playing its first game without former quarterback Colin Kaepernick, moved the ball but failed to keep pace on the scoreboard. The Wolf Pack had an interception and a missed field goal on two of their first three drives before the game got away from them.
Nevada (0-1), which will play its next three games on the road — at San Jose State, at Texas Tech and at No. 5 Boise State — was outgained 603-516.
Tyler Lantrip finished 21-of-35 for 219 yards, with a touchdown and a pair of interceptions for the Wolf Pack, who trailed 41-7 at the half.
