Recap: Vanderbilt 45, Elon 14
Sep 3, 2011
Larry Smith threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as Vanderbilt took off in the second half for a 45-14 rout of Elon on Saturday in Nashville, Tenn., in coach James Franklin's debut.
Smith's 16-yard TD run put the Commodores ahead for good 14-7 with 8:20 left in the second quarter. Fourteen seconds later, Vanderbilt's Trey Wilson intercepted Elon’s Thomas Wilson and returned it for a 21-yard touchdown.
The Commodores put the game away with a 21-point fourth quarter as they won their opener for the third time in four seasons. Redshirt freshman Chris Boyd made two catches - both touchdowns - in the fourth.
Wesley Tate also added a late TD run, and Fitz Lassing caught a 15-yard pass from Smith for the game's first score.
The point total marked Vanderbilt’s highest output since a 52-6 throttling of Eastern Michigan on Oct. 9. That was also the only time the 2010 Commodores scored more than 28 points.
Elon lost despite outgaining the Commodores 323-309, but didn’t help itself by committing three turnovers, including two interceptions by new starting quarterback Wilson.
Elon's Aaron Mellette made 11 catches for 180 yards and a touchdown.
